I have to admit, I put off reading this book because of it's sheer mass. It was about 1200 pages. The beginning worried me a little because it was dry and hard to connect with the characters, but the scene introducing Hank Reardon's family brings the characters to life! I loved the characters and with two exceptions, I loved the story. The two exceptions are 1) Why does EVERY 'good' male character have to be in love with Dagney? and 2) Dagney is so selfish that she doesn't care about the consequences of finding JG?! Very annoying. Those exceptions aside, this was a great book. The most troubling part was that I was occasionally confused about whether something was happening in the book or whether it was something actually happening in our own domestic current events... Also, this isn't the Bible. This is a NOVEL. People who get extremely polarized (love it and want to live it, or hate it and want to burn it) about this book need to read and absorb those two sentences.

Very innovative idea, well-described. Captivating until near the climax, then for some reason seemed to drag. Maybe too many words by that point. But a very worth-while read in any event.

I randomly picked up this book and loved it. It's about a couple roughneckers(or whatever you call people who drill for oil)from TEXAS. Freaking hilarious. If I produced movies I would totally make this into a movie. I'd case Vince Vaughn for sure. Read a long time ago..wold like to re-read.

This book was gripping. I loved the enigma of the story as it unfolds; I could tell there was more coming and couldn't wait to get there. This book is sorrowful but not depressing and is really a journey into the psyche(s) of the characters. I love the development of the characters, their foibles, their idiosynchrasies, their candidness. This book did require a "willing suspension of disbelief," which wasn't too difficult since it was enjoyable. I listened to this book on tape; the production was incredible ("Recorded Books"). I would highly recommend it.

The plot itself is a bit scandalous - 30-something teacher has a relationship with a 16 yr old student - but what makes the book so enjoyable is that the story is told from the first person viewpoint of a 60-something, never-married, bitter colleague of the teacher who has some pretty biting views on her students, colleagues and society in general. A quick, entertaining read.

I enjoyed reading it very much. I felt the time is very different because the people are so honest & moving whether good or evil. I hadn't know that Christianity played a huge part in the oppressed race patience & prayers. I guess when it comes to religion, the strong believers are the weaker individuals. I thought some characters were too perfect or dramatic but we are talking about a different era! I do recommend this book, many stories mingling together nicely & in a fast pace.

** spoiler alert ** Memoir of children's author/illustrator Mira Bartok. Tells her life with her schizophrenic mother. How she and her sister moved away and changed their names to keep their mother from finding them. Bartok was still able to keep tabs most of of the time about where her mother was. The sisters return to her on her deathbed. Wow, people really do survive some terrible things.

I just didn't enjoy this book. That woman can whine in so many levels and can come back to the same thought on one too many pages. It seemed that idea to have 108 chapters where sucked out of a pen. I would have liked to scream to her: HAVE SOME DIGNITY WOMAN! I gave this book three changes and from the middle I didn't read the whole chapters since I just couldn't see what the fuzz was? Why so much "noise" around this not so well written book(from half the story I just skimmed through). OK I can't relate to divorce (not so unique, worst things can happen), crying to wits ends in the bathroom, deciding do go on a journey, eat way too much (hah skinny my ass), put oneself through yoga and meditation when it wasn't meant to be(just to get the pages filled, torture) and the after repeatedly saying - no to love, hop in a bed with one not so hot Romeo. Maybe movie is better, if I dear to watch it.
