It took me forever to get through this one- mostly because it wasn't *that* interesting. It had its moments, but I kept wishing for it to move along

if you needed any additional evidence of my abject dorkiness, here you go: this book is awesome.

I wanted to love this book because it was a birthday present & a P&P spin-off but it didn't work for a few reasons, Jane Austen reasons. Jane would never have gotten as explicit. I also felt that from page one, Darcy & Elizabeth went out of character immediately. What makes the real Pride & Prejudice a classic is the wit & the class divide... as well as the friction between Darcy & Elizabeth. This became "Harlequin-type" rather than a romantic story. Nothing like the Darcy & Eliza "I" know so well.

The critics raved about this book, and I can see why, but I much preferred The Constant Gardener. Le Carre is certainly a marvelous writer, who does a great job of portraying the convoluted, elitist world of British Intelligence. Yet somehow I couldn't really engage with this set of characters.
One of my less favorite Irving books.

This is an exceptional book. The only criticism I have is that the editing seems sporadic, resulting in repetition and sometimes mis-placed sections. However, the subject matter is rivetting and the history of the plains indians and the gradual encroachment of the settlers is handled in a way to present both sides of this massive culture clash and leaves the reader with many lingering and thought-provoking memories.
I was reading this when Washington's former Governor Locke made the news as he arrived in China to be our new ambassador-- with his traveler's backpack and buying his own coffee--very simple and humble and so much like Professor Dodd's philosophy of public service just as Hitler rose to power in 1933. I grew to love this decent man and quiet American hero who tried to represent the best of American democracy in an impossible situation. Larson creates a gripping story out of dusty archives and brings the fear of an era to life.
