Dianna Wynne Jones writes beautiful stories that don't talk down to children, and so a result can be thoroughly enjoyed by adults. I've read all three books in the Howl series and I intend to read all the books written by Ms. Jones. It's a shame that we've lost her. Her imagination is filled with whimsy that manages to tackle serious subjects, like love, war and betrayal in a way that leaves you hopeful and inspired.

This is the neatest book in the series. Lots of will they won't they out of nowhere sexual tension. Raids into fairy land. Big reveals and traitors and a horribly sappy ending. Butcher is nothing but consistent.

There were parts of this book that I loved. The ending was not one of them. The message of compassion and fair labor was loud and clear but I thought the ending was ham-fisted and that the probability of the main character becoming an anti-labor radical was a bit far-fetched.

On Tenterhooks: To be in a state of uneasy suspense or painful anxiety until the very last moment. Suggesting that someones emotions are tightly stretched like a piece of cloth held by a hooked nail. Exactly how I felt while reading this wonderful interpretation of Rumpelstiltskin. Much better than the original fairy tale which has never been one of my favorites. This is now one of my favorite fairy tales retold!
