It is so refreshing when you read something and it makes you go "Oh that's what it's like to actually like something instead of just tolerate it since you're already reading it!" This is a good book, hooray. Thanks to Meg for giving me a copy after I read a really good review of it in Salon. On New Year's Day my kitten peed on the dust jacket but the book was fine, and it turns out the inside cover is even prettier. Good job cover art. I know there's a lot of these books, grownup books with child narrators, it's a thing. I haven't read a lot of them though, and I wonder if I'd like them as much as I liked this, because Lawrence sits perfectly on the gap between literary and childlike -- he's not preternaturally gifted or anything, he just happens to tell us exactly the right things. And being inside his head is exactly like it should be: he expresses his thoughts in quotations a lot as they come to him, so we can follow his acute ups and downs and the differences between what he thinks and what he says. And it's cute how he says "actually" all the time. The only thing I'm not into is the use of elementary errors in the spelling and capitalization and punctuation etc. I don't need to think Lawrence is writing the book -- and it's never otherwise indicated that he is, which is good because I hate that device; "I just had to tell you my story!" -- and the narration would have exactly the same impact if it looked correct on the page. (The childlike grammar is a different thing, that totally works because it is careful and artful and natural to read. He's telling the book.) I really like the story, and the family dynamic between Lawrence and his baby sister, and Lawrence and his mother, and Lawrence and his hamster, and how he is their rudder. His mother's breakdowns are simple and well-drawn, and so is his love for her. The Roman setting is perfect, but also because you appreciate what this is going to be like for Lawrence to remember when he's older. Once the ending was near, I realized what was going to happen but in that good way where you're full of dread, not just "oh I see what you did there." Really liked it, really glad to read it.

I only read, "The Jungle Book" and I truly enjoyed it. He did a great job of capturing the ferocity of the animals along with their nobler emotions. I was too dumb to figure out all his politics, thus I enjoyed the story part. I read a few of his fables as well and there were purty good.

I picked this up on my Kindle for free (thanks Amazon!), as I thought that my daughter would like it. However, after I’d finished Arcadia Falls, I was going through a bit of a headachey time, and I knew that the next book I needed to start was Parrot & Olivier in America, which looked quite hard-going…so I took the easy route before starting it by reading this, a children’s book! I’m glad I did, as it was lovely. Just lovely. My daughter has since read it, and really enjoyed it too. Jack Brenin is a young lad who has come to live with his grandfather in rural England, having been living in Greece with his father following his mother’s death. Little does he know that his life is about to get fantastical as his very presence is playing out an ancient prophecy. There are some great new fantasy creatures, some haunting moments and nobody dies…it’s a truly beautiful kids’ book, with just the right mix of fast-paced action, minor peril, great friendships and Enid Blyton style ‘jolly hockeysticks’ food-based capers! I will definitely be getting the next one for us both to read!

Don't let the crappy movies fool you: this book is amazing. I re-read it almost every year and it seems to get better each time. I think it drags for the first 60 pages though my friend Daniel swears by them. I guess it takes all kinds... my favorite is probably the confrontation between the vampiric Lucy and Van Helsing. There's something about it that is just cool. (There's some intelligent analysis for you.)

Flora Segunda is a romp. While Wilce never explicitly lays out a detailed explanation of Flora's world, the impression given is that of an alternate magical universe, in which the Spanish Conquest (or, um, Califa v. Huitzils) is turned on its head. What information we are given comes from Flora, who, as a fourteen-year-old girl with a busy, crammed-full life, is a reliable narrator only when she's sleeping. This does not stop her from having decided opinions and views on her world and her place in it, and the reader must pick and choose what to trust. Wilce also does not spend time detailing the magic, it's complete history, (thank heavens), she puts her time and writing to better use with Flora, her family and friends. The characters are fully formed, conflicted and delightful to follow, especially when they make mistakes, which Flora does nearly every page. Her General mother, her grieving half-nuts father, her best friend Udo, Nini Mo, the Dainty Pirate: no one is infallible or completely trustworthy. Now, for a spoiler: There is a happy, trailing-off ending for Flora, though Wilce does not spare her much suffering early on. The ease with which she escapes is part of a pretty big (though not entirely unpredictable, since I was through trusting Flora at this point!) plot twist, and as she came through relatively unscathed, I was a bit disappointed by that. But overall, it was a satisfying read. Is this another trilogy? It would be nice to learn more about Califa, the Huitzils, and of course, Crackpot Manor, Flora's home of 1100 rooms. I also like the Spanish sprinkled throughout. There is so much in this book I can't cover it here. Go read it.

I think this is such a cute book. I picked it up at a used book store because my mom has this thing for witches, but I decided to keep it because I liked it so much. I didn't realize till rating it that there were more Winnie the Witch books. Library, here I come!

This is one of my favourite novels. To those who don't enjoy lots of pages about furniture, windows, streets etc. I will recommend reading an abridged version.
