Originally I gave this 2.5 stars - mainly because (1) the concept of being a sub to three guys annoyed me but the heroine went into it with her eyes wide open for money; and (2) because the heroine was annoying. She could be such a doormat at times you wanted to slap her. I've however found myself thinking back [pleasantly] to this book multiple times over the weeks since I read it which bumps it up a star.

After being told to read this book by so many people I was really expecting more. It was a decent read but not as amazing as I expected. Many of the literary allusions or metaphors were heavy handed and felt out of place in the book. I felt like Mr. Roth thought that I was an idiot since he spelled out every little thing. I appreciate it much more when an author will for instance describe an animal or item that is not part of the plot and let the reader get the connection between that description and one of the characters. It seems that every time it was done here the description ended with "like so and so". This really took me out of the book and made me feel like I was in high school english class, being told what things meant instead of figuring them out myself. The story was good, very interesting in how sad it was but how easily I could see it happen (especially being at a university which is where the story was set). The current attitude that college students have is well described in the book. Not all students are like this but there are quite a few who feel that they deserve a good grade even if they don't work for it. I wish that here Mr. Roth didn't make it seem like all students are like that since, in my opinion, it makes him sound bitter. There are still good students out there. Students who work hard and earn their grades. I could rant about this attitude forever since it is the end of the semester and my students are trying to get as many points as possible but I'll stop here.

Shameful obsession with this series. I live for easy, feel-good summer reading.

At the end of the second book, Lizzie is engaged to Luke. In this book, Lizzie really comes into her own. She starts her own business and realizes true love but not with Luke. Definitely a fun read!
چاپ خوبی نیست.ترجمه ی خوبی ندارد و می شود گفت ویراستاری اصلا نشده.با همه این ها باید خوانده شود

Common characters linking all stories. Common theme: death. Lots I just could not understand. Different. OK

This is fun. TONS of verbs and onomatopoeia. Fun, predictable repetition.

Excellent, full of unexpected twists, never unrealistically happy go lucky, it always had a feel of sadness to it. Overall a great story about the love of brothers and fathers, duty, regret and forgiveness. Excellent. Id give it a 4.5 if i could.

I found this book on the Guardians top 1,000 books list... For some reason, most of the books on this list appear to be of love affairs, poorly planned, badly executed and reflected in death. And so it is. Greene's book conjures up a depressing, gray, wet, post-war London, full of miserable people; bored to distraction, insecure and ambling slowly to self-destruction as best etiquette will allow. Where Greene shines here, is in getting the surging self-loathing of the protagonist onto the page, a vomiting, painful, horrible process; Being inside this persons head, as close as Greene gets you, is an unpleasant, visceral experience - one that I think is perhaps why this book is on a list of great literature. Read it and be glad you are not in the 1950's and therapy is freely available!

I suggest reading this book after reading Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies. They help put in perspective the odd divisions and violent history between/of Haiti & the Dominican Republic.
