A *great* book for anyone who wants to understan mysql better and how to tune it. I particularly liked it because it started at the basics with a conceptual overview, then dived into details. There are probably even more details it didn't go into, so I'll start looking for the next book. But this one was invaluable.

compared to Gilead, it feels extremely edgy and uncomfortable, but I think that's intentional. I never really identified or sympathized deeply with the characters, but it's still beautiful, despite all that.

This is one of a few books that I started but could not finish. Too much like philosophy. I read more than half the book but I think I understood about one third of what I read. If you are a deep thinker and enjoy a philosphy/religious reading, this may be the book for you.

Our book club met Nancy Horan at Books and Books, Coral Gables and she was just mesmerizing. We can't wait for her last book to come out! When I read it, I just couldn't put it down. Beautifully written and at a pace and authenticity that was incredible how Horan was able to transmit by using historical facts a beautifully weaved story that does not leave any gaps, and finishes full circle.

Incredible...for a couple of months while and after I read this book, I thought I was going to be a writer, because I couldn't think of any other way of dealing with the genius displayed in its pages than to emulate/compete with it. Nabokov pries me open, because he legitimizes a personality and attitude to life completely different from my own. He forces me to awareness of the distinction between the intelligent and the moral. With Van he proved that there was nothing incoherent about being happy, intelligent, and a womanizer.
