This is one of four Georgette Heyer books my mother bought me years and years ago. At the time I thought they seemed kind of dry and, as I was slowly gravitating away from reading mostly classical fiction, I put them in my bookcase where they've remained unread ever since, through fifteen years and four separate instances of moving house, until I finally picked The Reluctant Widow up last month. It's a pleasant read and not as dry as I'd feared — even managed to pull a few chuckles out of me — but really nothing to write home about. I found the plot to be a bit disappointing, because the premise is rather exciting but I feel like the potential was never explored; the book's 300 odd pages long, and there's really nothing to it. "It's a story about hunting for hidden papers in a large house", and doesn't that sound dull? Well, in reality it's even less interesting. I know it's unfair to compare Heyer to Austen, but I'm going to do it anyway, because if Austen can use even less pages to create entire worlds, then Heyer should have been able to come up with something more entertaining and far more substantial than what she did. That's not saying that it's a bad book. It's just... lackluster. If this is any indication, the three remaining Heyer books in my personal library will have to wait a little bit longer — let's aim for 2019, shall we?

This is a good, old-fashioned ghost story: intriguing; dark; moody; mysterious and creepy. It's more Dickens than King - at least early King - meaning it's more suspenseful than horrifying (and it's set in foggy, misty England, in a time period that's not really apparent from the story.) It's also the kind of mystery that unfolded slowly enough to keep me interested while at the same time giving up enough details along the way to let me guess (accurately, as it turned out) what was really going on. I always enjoy that, since I can be a bit slow sometimes when it comes to unravelling plot. All in all, a good tale for a "dark and stormy night."

Beautifully, simply and powerfully written, this novel by Lisa Genova allows us to be a passenger on the one-way journey of an intelligent and capable woman through her discovery that she has early onset Alzheimer's Disease. I gained a greater perspective on the invisible interior struggles at every turn. For me, this will be worth a second, if not third, read. I have a renewed respect for the fragility of life --not just of death itself but the precarious nature of being truly involved and connected while living. I personally will not put off collecting, sharing and documenting my thoughts and life experience.

Spero Lucas is an Iraq War vet trying to find his niche in life after seeing more than enough action. But the life he has chosen feeds his adrenaline rush and his need to work solo. He works for an attorney recovering stolen items. Hawkins, the attorney’s client, is in jail awaiting trial but still seems to be conducting business as usual from behind bars. Several packages of marijuana worth thousands are stolen from the front steps of three different houses. Lucas’ cut is 40% if he can locate the missing packages. Two youths who work for Hawkins are murdered right after calling Lucas with a cryptic message…just four numbers. Now Hawkins isn’t that interested in his missing packages but Lucas was hired to do a job so the hunt is on. This book is testosterone heavy with Lucas jumping in and out of bed with a couple women and it is constantly mentioned after riding his bike or exercising that Lucas “needs a woman.” While on surveillance the reader gets to hear how Lucas uses a bottle for a bathroom break…too much information, thank you. The friendly barbs exchanged with his brother are amusing but I found it ironic that Lucas is chasing down missing illegal pot yet fires up a joint every now and then. I am a stickler for laws so I have little patience when characters I am supposed to like break them. Yet I am a huge fan of Dexter. Maybe because Dexter kills those society is better without. Maybe because Dexter is so likeable I can forgive him. Lucas did kill some people that society is better without but for some reason I wasn’t that fond of him. Perhaps the author is showing reality, i.e., thirty-year-olds smoke pot. I had to ponder – if Dexter used drugs, would I still be that fond of him? I think not. Drugs are a major pet peeve of mine so I’m not the best judge to rate this book.

This is a book, not only about a Superbowl Champion Quarterback, but a story about perseverance. A story about wanting one thing one day, and realizing you meant for something greater. I knew of Drew Brees when I got the book, I only knew he was the QB that took New Orleans to the Superbowl and won. Heck, I watched the game and cheered him on. But I had no idea the life he lived to lead him to that point, nor how significant that moment he raised his son above his head when he won, would turn out to be. The only way I would know was reading this book, and based on that, I urge you to do the same. 3.5/5
