This is an incredible book! It's a companion to Graceling, with totally different characters but equally as compelling. In this story Fire a "monster" whose beauty literally makes those around her act their worst and who has the ability to read and alter minds has to help save her people. She makes lots of mistakes and even in the end has many doubts about herself, but ultimately becomes a hero you can't help but root for. These books are just so good!

From start to finish there is the sense of absurdity -- his arrest for something he knows nothing about and a legal system that seems entirely inaccessible or almost non-existent. The absurdity of it made it difficult to get into the book through the first few chapters and even through the middle -- but the payoff (which was very rewarding to me) comes in the final three chapters when K. encounters Block and then the prison chaplain and Kafka's criticism of the Law becomes clear. The book appealed to me because of its existential devices and mood. Not a very easy read, hardly a book to just picture up for leisure reading, but appealing to those with a philosophical/existential, and to some extent, legal bend.

A review and statistical analysis of strategies in baseball. The authors pick through baseball ideas very methodically, and the book's organization is its biggest virtue. It really steps you carefully through each consideration and checks each possibility. The best sections are the chapters on bunting and intentional walks. Unfortunately the thoroughness is done up to a fault; the writing style gets a little repetitive and could really have used some editorial work. There are also some methodology question marks - the authors sometimes use arbitrary thresholds and splits that seem reasonable enough but beg the question, "Why this way instead of that way?" Not for beginners to the subject of statistical sports analysis, even if it purports to be aiming for the general public.

School makes the book bad! I liked the whole thing about the Christmas Carol. I would have liked it better and would've been inspired if it weren't for all the close reading crap, the worksheets, and the dang dialectic journal.
