I was really excited to read my first Edna O'Brien novel; I have only heard positive things about her work. Perhaps, I should give this book more accolades, but I really didn't connect with any of the characters and the psychopath was so schizophrenic that it was really difficult to follow his point-of-view chapters. It was a somewhat lackluster experience.

Fans of Stephen King's "Good Old Fashioned" horror stories will devour this most excellent creation offered to us by his son, Joe Hill!! Don't be mistaken!! He has his own unique style and is ever so good in his own right. I would have read it even not knowing that he was the son of my favorite author because of the modern and unique concept of buying a ghost from the Internet. How cool is that?!? If he continues to create the same type of story, I will be a most avid fan. Some of Stephen's work I just couldn't get into, like the Dark Tower series. I LOVE the old Salem's Lot, Bag of Bones, Misery, Needful Things books!! Give me possessed objects, vampires and unsettled ghosts any day!

Would recommend: No I don't read the author's blog regularly because I feel like the tone affects me negatively. I have a low tolerance for prolific hyperbole, nauseating mental images, and sentences in all capital letters. That said, I read it as fast as possible (4 total hours) so I could at least form an opinion. This book met my expectations, and I thoroughly disliked it.

This is a fascinating tale, and a great book to discuss. Henrietta Lacks was born in Central Virginia in 1920 and died in Baltimore when she was 31, leaving a husband and 5 children. What she didn't know she left behind were pieces of the tumor her doctor removed which were then shared with another doctor, who cultivated them and - voila - HeLa cells were discovered. (If you've never heard of HeLa, ask anyone you know in the medical profession ... anyone.) This was an undertaking by a previously unknown author, who spent years and her student-loan money to research and write this story. It is also a sad footnote in history of what happens when society turns its back on a segment of the population, how they survive just beyond our line of site - unknown, unrecognizable to us - until we are forced to take a look. Skloot forces us to look, and what she finds isn't always pretty.
