I am mixed on "King John." It starts off a bit slow and somewhat dull but comes through in Act V. If you are looking for an exploration of the Magna Carta through Shakespeare's eyes forget it--it is not even mentioned. Still, it is Shakespeare so it rates a read.

My older brother ran away from home several times and I often had a bag packed myself as a young boy. This book was initially read more for information than for entertainment, but I re-read it several times along with "My Side of the Mountan" by Jean George and "Runaways" by Victor Canning. Kids need to escape into fantasy stories like these in order to cope with the emotional ups and downs of the teenage years. I think this was a pretty honest portrayal of a runaway. I still pick it up now and then to skim after 39 years. (I almost never throw a book away)

This book came to me because the recommender asked what that funny statue was in my living room. I replied, a tanuki. He looked at me strangely, so I spelled tanuki out for him. Then, much to my surprise, he said I read a book about tanukis and I thought they were made up by the author. Well, Tom Robbins did not make up the story of the tanuki from scratch, but he did embellish on the Japanese legend. Robbins is one of those rare authors where I stop for a second and think, how the hell did he come up with this?! He is creative without being unbelievable. He writes as if you were having a direct conversation with him and not just merely reading a novel. He doesn't explain every detail immediately, and let's the pieces fall into place as the reader moves along. He is well-versed in current events, mythology, philosophy, and pop culture. In other words, he is a rarity. The plot jumps back and forth without being overly confusing. You have to trust that the loose ends will be tied up eventually, and it is worth the wait. Everything and everyone is connected, and what at first might seem like happenstance, turns out to be another fork in the road. Suspension of reality may be necessary while reading this novel, but at the time, it doesn't seem out of the ordinary.

Harry Dresden is at it again. Queen Mab, seemingly unable to speak with her own voice, requests favor number two from our favorite Wizard. The favor is to save Gentleman Jonny Marcone from his kidnappers. Many adventures take place. The magic is fantastic, as always. Many story lines are opened up here, but not completely finished - thought the story is quite excellent.

All in all, I liked this book a lot. I haven't been to law school, so I can't vouch for how closely Turrow's account mirrors other "one L" experiences, but I think that some of those who dock the book on this point may want to consider that Turrow was writing in the 1970s and from Harvard Law School, which, the book makes clear, tries very hard to be extraodinary in all ways. It's safe to assume that the student experience at Harvard -- particularly those that predate the period of reform the author suggests was on the horizon -- differ greatly from those at less august institutions and in an era of more liberal/humane instruction.

While some of this would be more powerful heard (as intended) than it is read, these are very valuable essays. The famous quote "Your silence will not protect you" comes from here.

Hidden Currents is book 7 (the final installment, perhaps...) of Christine Feehan's enjoyable Drake Sisters series. In it, we find the story of the youngest sister Elle Drake, and the man destined to help her shoulder the intimidating Drake legacy, Jackson Deveau. Years ago, as Jackson lay in enemy hands, tortured and broken, Elle filled his mind and shared her psychic energy and strength with him to save his soul. After his escape, Jackson moved to Sea Haven with his friend Jonas Harrington to meet Elle. For years, he has lived on the outskirts of her life, afraid that Elle will never be able to accept the violence that taints him, terrified of the Drake legacy, until the day comes that he must save her life. Working undercover to bring down a powerful human trafficking ring, Elle is taken prisoner by a strong psychic. She must trust that Jackson and her sisters will come for her, as she endures sadistic torture from a violent man determined to break her spirit, dominate her life, and control her. Hidden Currents is the most disturbing installment yet in the Drake Sisters saga. The first six chapters are full of shocking details of Elle's kidnap and the subsequent physical and psychological torture she experienced at the hands of a madman. It is sickening and alarming, and is really difficult to read. In fact, I put the book down for a few days after reading those chapters - I was simply overwhelmed. But once I picked it back up, I couldn't put it down. Elle and Jackson are very powerful couple with a dynamic story. I was happy to see the other sisters and their husbands/fiancés in Hidden Currents as well. Feehan always does an incredible job of tying her characters together with characters from other books in her series, and I am always ready to embrace them and find out what they've been up to. As the last book in this series, Hidden Currents doesn't quite live up to the earlier books. Don't get me wrong, everything ends neatly, but it seemed as if something was missing. Perhaps Feehan was trying to leave an opening for further books - maybe from the perspective of Ilya's brothers? I suppose we'll have to stay tuned to see if anything comes from that.
