"It was as black in the closet as old blood. They had shoved me in and locked the door. I breathed heavily through my nose, fighting desperately to remain calm. I tried counting to ten on every intake of breath, and to eight as I released each one slowly into the darkness. Luckily for me, they had pulled the gag so tightly into my open mouth that my nostrils were left unobstructed, and I was able to draw in one slow lungful after another of the stale, musty air." While I don't normally pick up crime novels, Sweetness caught my interest because it was so highly acclaimed, and because my brother recommended it. It was a good book - albeit, a fast, non-thinking kind of book. I didn't particularly care for the characters (although the main character, Flavia, is mildly amusing). The mystery was well-written - insomuch as the reader won't figure out "who did it" right away. Maybe it's just me, but this book didn't excite me. It was just okay. There's lots of kinds of books that I consider easy and fun reads. If you like crime fiction, this is probably one of them. Since I don't particular like that genre, I think I'll stick with the ones I do like.

You know those books where your friends tell you that you should read it and when you do, you wonder if your friends know you at all. Well, that was Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand for me. This slow meandering story of a spineless wishy-washy man had me wondering when this book would ever be over. It started slow with the introduction of retired Major Ernest Pettigrew. A lonely older gentleman who is overly fastidious about all the proper ways of the English. Ernest’s life is thrown into a downright tizzy when upon the death of his brother, the family heirloom is not returned to him in the way that he was lead to believe it would be and therefore all is not right in his world. While in the midst of this life changer, Major Pettigrew develops a friendship with the Pakistani shopkeeper, Mrs. Ali that is frowned upon by the community because in proper culture and tradition this is just not done. I know a boring synopsis, but when the book is boring, there is not much chance of an enthralling summary. Oh, and the cover picture. My mind kept seeing it as an embracing couple, when it fact, I now see it as two coats on a rack. Really, I think I spent more time looking at this picture then I did concentrating on the plotline and wondered what story they were trying to tell with the art. Why finish the book when I obviously did not like it very much – British humor. From time to time, there is a sudden zinger that had me chuckling. It was the token silver lining to this slow moving monotonous tale. Would I recommend it, personally No; but there does seem to be a large contingent that adored this book, I just did not see it.

It was a really nice story. I enjoyed reading it and it left me in a good mood after finishing it. Caesar and Nate are the kind of men I like. Strong willed, in great shape and just rightly masculine. Their relationship (their sexual one) was rather well balanced. Nate might have been bottoming, but you never got the sensation that he wanted to play the submissive role, more like he enjoyed giving himself to Caesar, while still controlling the situation. I suppose his physique also helped with that. I liked that both men were dedicated to their occupations and that the author gave enough attention and detail to how they performed their work. It helped create the characters. Caesar was living the only life he thought he was entitled to, not daring to hope for a chance at a different work or a chance at love. Nate was too occupied with holding up the image he had created at work of a dependable gay police man that he had no time to find love. Certainly not in the arms of a formerly convicted felon. And yet, they made it work. Lust and passion ignited things between them, then the death threats and whole scandal offered them the possiblity to know each other better and see behind the first impression, find all the ways in which a relationship between them could work. I liked that Caesar as well as Nate were gruffy men, unable to say out loud that they had feeling for each other, though their body language spoke volumes. I truly enjoyed the story! It had its funny moments, exciting paraghraps and most erotic moments! Very good story.

Kendra and Seth can't wait for the end of the school year so that they can return to visit their grandparents at Fablehaven. A few days before the school year ends, a scabby kobold appears in her class. The kobold appears normal to everybody except Kendra. With the aid of a kobold exterminator they get rid of him and are then swiftly evacuated to Fablehaven for their own safety. Once there, they find out that the Society of the Evening Star (which opposes preserves such as Fablehaven) has gotten stronger and may have even breached Fablehaven itself. My Review: My goal is to read 4 books between each book of a single author that I read (does that even make sense?). With these Fablehaven books I just couldn't stop myself. In fact, Alison probably resents the books as well because I read most of the book yesterday evening. I wasn't going to go to bed until I finished it. Now onto the book, this book is once again like Harry Potter with adventures and fights against magical creatures. Of course, the kids are always more clever and tougher than the adults. There are unexpected twists and surprises, giving a very enjoyable book.
