I bought this after being intrigued by its mention in an article in the NYTimes magazine last week. I'd never heard of the website dooced, which is the source of this author's fame. I wanted to read this because it is supposed to be about her postpartum depression. But, despite the supposed depression taking a starring role in both the introduction and the acknowledgments, there is surprisingly little of it in the book itself. There are more stories about her dog and her hemorrhoids than about her depression. She's a "funny" writer, in the sense that every other sentence is some kind of quip, a la Rodney Dangerfield. The problem is that the quips aren't amusing, at least not to me. When she wasn't trying so hard to be "funny", there were some good moments. I identified with her crushing anxiety in the evenings, knowing she wouldn't sleep that night, and I thought she wrote well in general about the around-the-clock hell of dealing with an infant that doesn't sleep: "Being a mother was the hardest thing I'd ever done. It was really, really hard. It was impossible to make a single coherent decision when I was completely beholden to another creature's sleep schedule, and that creature happened to sleep in random 90 minute blocks. It wasn't so much sadness I felt but utter delirium, and by the end of the day when we faced another night of not knowing if she was going to sleep, it was hard not to ask myself, how the hell can I do this another day?" Well said. I'll check out her blog (apparently it's hugely popular and makes her millions and somehow I've never heard of it) but I don't recommend this book.

This biography is continents away from any rock biography I've ever read. The normal trappings of the musician's lifestyle: sex, drugs, and top-shelf liquor, are incidental to Hersh's creative process. Free of the posturing, self-importance, and name-dropping that characterizes the average rock star's "literary" efforts, Hersh presents herself as more of a conduit for songs that already exist in the universe. Instead, the loving, familial relationship between herself and her bandmates, the perfection of feeling that comes with a great creative endeavor, and the dark notes her bipolar disorder brought to the musical process are her themes. Hersh's worldview is so different, the things she thinks to question are so surprising (Buildings. Who even questions buildings?), the unusual friends who help her determine her direction (Betty, her aging silent movie star schoolmate and touchstone is a stand-out real-life character), and her steadfast ability to stay above the pretense one expects from a "rock star," give the outline of a life that's not only examined, but really exciting to read about. I read biographies to get a peek at how other people's lives are shaped. The shape of this one is really unique.

if it were just that i sought to comment on the story alone, the narrative, i would have to say i liked this book. i would also have to say that although the point of view shifts between the three main characters: a sailor and a mother and her son, i was most attached to that of the son and the way in which the other characters were often given more life through his eyes. but the reason this book becomes more than just something i like are the ideas. the snatched glimpses through the cupboard into another room that becomes forbidden from that vantage and speaks the truth only in being perceived in that way. i don't completely understand all the ideas presented nor their logic, not that one completely understands, but i don't understand them to an unnerving degree that makes them very interesting.
