I ended up not really enjoying this one. There were things I liked about it- the perspective was kind of fun. Seeing things from the elephants' points of view was an interesting change. Their mythology, their creation story, their after-life were all enjoyable. It was also fascinating to learn a bit about their family units and the hierarchy that goes along with them. What ruined the book for me though was the constant obsession with poop and sex. Granted, it's animal sex, so it's different- less offensive- than if we were talking about humans, but it was still a major and unnecessary distraction from the story. And while it's true that animals are obsessed with dung and urine and anything else that marks a strong scent, as a human, I don't care to hear about animals eating each others' poo. Maybe that's just me, though. Also, I didn't care for the ending, but I won't spoil it by going into detail. But I have to give Gowdy props for doing something completely different.

This is what the "Da Vinci Code" should have been like! So good, so detailed, I'd almost call it historical fiction, but I won't. =) It sucked me in and then spit me out later with all sorts of thoughts about Dante (which, admittedly, I haven't read in literally years). The only thing is that the ending was anticlimatical. I found the ending an almost bizarre reversal, it was that poorly done. =(

This book started off really slow but it started to pick up when Esther would talk about her relationship with Buddy. I saw so much of myself in her thoughts and actions yet I didn't understand her. WHat drove her to insanity? Was it the attack by Marcos? Buddy's betrayal? Did her bad luck with guys and unrealistic thinking of men have anything to do with her dad? And also, I don't understand what happened when she finally did have sex. Why was she bleeding so much? What happened? I don't quite understand why this book is a classic. What is the bell jar? Is it insanity? Life? I think I'm missing something.

Another early novel in Spanish, the classic "picaresque," starring a little scoundrel or picaro (with an accent on the first syllable). Surprisingly modern and witty in tone, as is Don Quixote, the later and more commonly cited prototypical novel in Spanish.

A co-worker recommended this book, and he acting like it was the given words of the creator of the universe. I read it and I didn't get much out of it. Sure, it's got some good tactics and techniques, but if you want to know how to go to war, read a poker book. The difficulty in this book is converting the practical war tactics to the everyday. It would definitely take some study and application to accomplish this so that you were operating at a subconscious level and not thinking, "Hmm, what would Sun Tzu do?"

What is enjoyable about this one is the hero's obvious (to the reader) affection for his wife, the heroine, while she continues to be oblivious. Occasionally, she is comes perilously close to too-oblivious, making me feel some impatience with her, though this is not overwhelming. What I would've liked to see more of was some sense of relationship-building - that is, some scenes where the growth of the hero's feelings happen. Instead, it's all established before the beginning of the book, and most of the scenes with hero and heroine are fairly fraught as the conflict is introduced. The main source of the conflict was what really lowered its quality for me - a crazy Frenchwoman who has apparently decided she's going to steal the husband for herself. I think she actually had fangs, she was so over-the-top. To give Bianchin some credit, there are no scenes of hysterical recriminations where the heroine believes the crazy woman, and hero declines to defend himself, or believes some crazy thing the Frenchwoman says, or anything truly dumb like that. Whew. But the villainess is such a caricature (and a device that Bianchin has used in other books, to my dismay), that it spoiled what otherwise might have been a lovely marriage-of-convenience story.

This is not a canned-soup-reliant book. These are not quick recipes, and most of them require complicated enough preparation that I don't think they could be made ahead and frozen. The up side of that is that they don't seem to cut a lot of corners and the recipes are surprisingly varied and actually sound appetizing, despite what we tend to think nowadays when we hear "casserole."

Meh. A book of trivialities. I understand how showing the trivialities of life can help you get a glimpse of a different world, but the trivialities didn't feel particularly good or realistic. Maybe they did when this book was written. The book within the book felt kinda silly. I was expecting more political intrigue. I got my hopes up when there was trouble in the German government but nothing interesting came out of that.

Very good writing and character exploration, but the characters are so unlikable that it is frankly nigh unto impossible to care about what happens to them.
