This book in my opinion fails on most (if not all) accounts. Plot-wise, it barely kept me interested and just drudged from one thing to the next with just barely a thought. Character-wise, I hated the main character. If Salinger meant for this guy to be unlikeable, then he succeeded. Holden is a hypocritical, sporadic, unlikeable jerk and he doesn't even seem to realize half of this. He spends half the time dwelling on the fact that everyone is "phoney" when he's "phoney" himself! So obviously this fails to entertain. How about morality? Well, when he isn't swearing his little teenage mind off or deciding not to have sex with prostitutes, he ends up decided to just go along with what people are telling him to do and stay where he is and have counseling (or whatever it is he's doing while he's discussing his life story). The Catcher in the Rye is my least-favorite book for a reason. It fails to capture my interest while also failing to keep me uplifted. What's the point of it? If all it's good for is it's symbolism and connecting to the teenage mind, then first of all: Symbolism only works if the material is interesting enough, and second of all: I never even once related with this jerk or felt any empathy towards him.

I read this for my first book club, and it isn't the type of thing that would have grabbed me if it hadn't essentially been assigned. That said, I wasn't too happy with it. It was sort of fun and interesting to read the accounts of the various people who knew this kid before he died in the Alaska wilderness, and it was similarly fun to consume alcohol while speculating about how messed up he may have been, or why the author seems to be so keen on him. Basically, as far as the Chris McCandless story goes, it's pretty painful to sit through the account of someone accidentally dying in a slow, avoidable way. Besides that, the book clubbers were generally not empathetic with a character who had no apparent respect or appreciation for a seemingly decent family. As for the author's account of the story, it does an unconvincing job of redeeming McCandless, even though it casts him in a slightly better light than some media coverage might have. It seems in large part to be a vehicle for the author to recount his own, more successful youthful Alaskan adventure.

“When they [the lovers] come upon such a person [the beloved], the memory of the god they followed is aroused; enraptured, they pattern their way and manner of life upon his—in so far as a man can partake of a god’s ways.” "...in his lover he beholds himself and does not know it."

It's been so long since I've read this book. But I remember that I liked it. I'll have to go dig it out of a box and read it again.

Great read. One can truly sink in this book's wittyness and humor. It's amazing how secrets can make life so much interesting and chaotic. One can really sympathize with the heroine and enjoy her everyday life.

More reviews at Rondo of a Possible World: YA Book Reviews Action-packed, thickening plot, three-dimensional characters, and humor drizzled on each character, Fullmetal Alchemist is a book that should definitely be read by all. Left me with tears in my eyes and a warm heart for every character that you meet along Ed and Al's long journey.

It's funny, 'cause it's true.

Another witty & engaging read in the series, but there is less plot & overall story here, although there is also some nice fleshing out of some of the accessory characters. There are times when Alexia is guided more by emotion than logic, which is odd enough to wonder how her character will evolve in the next book.

Should be rediscovered. Perfectly paced, slyly funny, and quite clever. Read it.

Really digging Sanderson. This book, while ostensibly just an easy mindless read, actually has a lot of interesting things to say about religion and governance. But it's also an enjoyable pretty mindless read.
