Ooohhh! So suspenseful-all the way up to the end! Great story. I'm a little ambiguous about the ending, but otherwise it was a great book. Couldn't put it down.

Michael Chabon never disappoints, and this is no exception. I expected to fly through this book as I have his others, but really, it took longer than expected because I was so concious of every word. I felt like I had to chew a lot of the passages, which was great fun. The strangest, and most wonderful, whodunnit I've ever read. (It's not quite Kavalier and Clay, but remarkable nonetheless.)

When I read this book, I had a hard time with it for the first 100 pages or so. It seemed to creep along. I think I had to put it down a couple of times and come back to it. But when I finally got into it, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to see where it would finally go. And I was scared, but not disappointed by where it went. The frightening thing about this book is how prophetic it is. We now see the potential for some of the horrifying things that happen in this story. If the term "big brother" didn't come from this book, it was made infamous by it.

Just the fact that Piers Anthony is able to make a fairly convincing argument for an incarnation of evil is pretty amazing. It is a difficult topic, but he does it surprisingly well. My major complaint is that the story line seems a bit awkward at times, which he seems to try to cover by blaming it on the fact that men are slaves to sex. Hmmm, not convinced. Having said that, there is a fair bit of sex in this one, so it probably is not a great choice for younger fantasy readers.

I'm reading all three volumes of Kjærstad's 'Wergeland' trilogy this summer (The Seducer, The Conqueror, and The Discoverer) and will be reviewing them as a whole in August or September after the publication of the last book. It's an epic task--perhaps more epic than I realized when I started--but even as I was getting a bit exhausted by the end of The Seducer, it ends on such an expansive note that I suddenly feel like I have this new burst of momentum. Don't get me wrong: I love the ideas in this book, and I've definitely felt inspired by this book. However, Martha, being a craft-goddess herself, doesn't provide much by way of explicit directions and step-by-step instructions, or illustrations. This book is a good reference, and a good inspiration, but when it comes time to actually creating something, I generally end up looking it up elsewhere or utilizing a pattern.
