Pretty good. A little twilighty for my taste, and the love interest gets pretty gross at the end, but the action is much better than twilight, and the plot is more intricate, I'd probably give it a 3.5, pretty good.

"An Epic Novel of Japan" the cover boasts--and perhaps it is, although it serves better as a set up to its sequel than anything else. Still, there are some great moments in here, and the interpretation of Japan that is built upon in this novel is good. The fanstasy elements, while too sparse to qualify the novel for any such genre label, enhance the characters of the story and don't dissuade the reader too much from the historical backrgound. It is only near the end, though, that the author's brilliance is first revealed--a power that is brought into full bearing in the sequel.

I really enjoyed this book. The ending part of the story made me cry. It's sad to know that things and lives don't last forever and eventually each of us has to move on. I think this is a sad but beautiful story of love, friendship and loss.

This was my first read of a collection of short stories and I was not disappointed. OK - some stories were very, very good...others were very good...and some were just good (kind of like a bell curve). I've got a keen interest in post-apocalyptic stories - can't explain...something about this kind of landscape intrigues me. Anyway, the collection had a nice variety of stories - each written in a different style and pursuing a different theme or take on post-apocalyptic life, survival, relationships, etc.. If you like this genre of literature, you'll love this book.
