I am not a big fan on these YA adult novels because usually it is boring, irritating or creepy. But this, this was really good. It had a different angle which had me from the start. Most amazing of all, it wasn't cheesy. Not at all. The novel is sweet, humorous and deep but never cheesy. Which, if you think about it, doesn't happen often, especially not in a YA novel tackling everyday situations.

Extremely odd and dark, but well-written.

** spoiler alert ** Should have been called The Infected. The characters were well fleshed-out before the virus came to attack them. Though I liked them, I did like the gory ending :)

The author, Julia Glass, wrote The Three Junes which I liked a lot and think about sometimes. I enjoyed the book, particularly because characters from The Three Junes were mentioned, and one of the characters played a part in this novel as well. Unfortunately, I found one of the main characters in the book, Greenie, to be irritating. The story lines about her foolish decisions let me down, however, I truly liked Walter. He was the character that saved the book for me.

This is pretty much my other favorite kids' book ever.

I have the original 2002 edition, which is 663 pages; I'd like to read this longer edition as well. This is a terrific encyclopedia (and dictionary) that does a good job of covering the history of the counterculture movement of the 1960s & 1970s. I’m a baby boomer and was an adolescent and young adult living in San Francisco during most of this time period – I smiled a lot in recognition while reading this book.

Ben is going through his mother's old belongings when a storm brews and lightning strikes the house. The force of the lightning goes through the phone he is holding against his ear, rendering him deaf. Instead of letting this setback in hearing bring him down, Ben decides that this is the perfect time for him to go to New York to try and find his father. Once there, he follows the tiny clues he has, until a chance encounter with a stranger from his past changes his life forever. Selznick's first book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, is all but a common sight in middle grade schools. I was a little late reading it, thinking that all of the hype was just that, but when I did finally read it, I was completely blown away. The beauty of the drawings and timing in the pictures, mixed with the fascinating story of a boy and clockwork things was enough to keep me glued to the book. Now with Selznick's second book, I was hoping lightning would strike twice. Unfortunately, while the drawings and timing still had that "tear-through-the-book" quality, the story wasn't as interesting for me. There is a breakneck speed at which the plot unfolds, but I never really felt invested in the characters enough to care about what was happening to them. Readers will be captivated by the silent action that unfolds for a magical reunion, but I am hoping Selznick's next book packs a little more punch.

I was so excited to rediscover Geraldine Brooks. I loved her book "Year of Wonders" which I read so long ago that I had forgotten about it. This book is said to be akin to "The Da Vinci Code." You travel back and forth through time following a Jewish book that is currently being restored. My book club loved it. I also plan to read "March" - as in Mr. March the father in "Little Women."

The book was very well written. I loved how it had some aspects of the Nephilim world. It kinda reminded me of the Mortal Instruments, but in this book the Nephil were perceived to me as bad and the angels were the good ones unless they fell from Heaven. I did not expect the end result and I was actually shocked to find out the Jules was the mastermind behind everything. The only thing that I fail to understand is why Patch was still trying to kill Nora when he was in love with her? Lastly, I kinda resent how things ended with Dabria. She wanted Patch to become a Guardian so they be together but he didn't want that. in the end that is what happened. But overall it was a really good book and I highly recommend it.
