I listened to this and it unfolded like a novel even though it is entirely non-fiction. That the author was able to blend the stories of the building of the World's Fair and the mind of a sociopath is remarkable and fascinating.

Reading this, I kept thinking it was "realist" in the worst sense -- the best you can say is that it's realistic, and meanwhile this reader is dying for a little style. I can't quite understand this novel's reputation -- maybe it has more to do with it's having been underrated and ignored, and so it's elevation has overreached. It does create a vivid sense of the suburbs, circa 1950 or so, but everything it has to say seems overly broad or already said. And in the end, things become melodramatic and quite a bit less realistic.

Well, crap. Apparently young Philip K. Dick was a terrible writer. Even the story this collection is named after was shockingly mediocre, and nothing I've read in this matches the literary subtlety or inherent weirdness of Dick's novels. Oh, well.
