engaging fable, but i wish it had ended before the epilogue. the search for the treasure is so much better than actually finding it, and i thought that was kind of what the book was trying to say... spoiler alert: it seems counter to what the book seems to be saying that the treasure ends up being so literal.

A gay friend of mine named Eric (He claims he's not gay, whatever doesn't really matter to me) insisted I read this book. He claimed it was great! Perhaps I was in a bad place at the time or maybe because my rambunctious friend hyped it too much but, I just wasn't all that impressed... HOWEVER (a huge however) it has the most amazing love story in it. I recommend watching the movie, one of the few cases where a movie (in my opinion) turned out better than the book. Anyway, back to the love story, maybe the best I've ever read/heard/saw I spent the whole movie/book literally on the edge of tears wishing beyond all hope she could just tell him!!! Damn it! Just say it! One other interesting part was when one of the geisha's told the story of 'the little eel finding its way into the cave' OMFG-LMAO! too funny. P.S. in the movie many of the actors were Chinese (as opposed to Japanese which is who they portrayed) but, you wouldn’t know it if no one told you; they pull it off quite well.

Rick Barba does a very good job of painting a picture and developing characters. However, even though this is an alternate universe, I don't think it gives license to do whatever the hell you want. Rick, if you read this, PLEASE pay attention to Trek more. You've introduced technologies and species that didn't come into play until the TNG years. You've also brought in elements that were CLEARLY not part of Earth history at this point in Star Trek. Come on! Show some respect to the subject and do a little research by just ASKING someone if this is okay before adding it. Clearly your editors aren't big fans or they would have caught these. Okay ripping over. I would totally read Rick's work, and plan on getting his other Academy story. The inconsistencies aren't so outrageous that I can't just look past them. They helped paint a small picture, but don't effect the core story. I like this so far.

I was very impressed with this book. Hans Fallada was a great writer and I look forward to reading more of his books. It was great to read a WWII book completely from the perspective of everyday Germans in Berlin.

This book was a really quick read - mostly dialogue. The cover and description were intriguing so I picked it up, but I didn't really connect to any of the characters. I doubt teenagers will either. None of them are even remotely developed. I wish that the book that been longer and that more time had been spent developing the sense of place and relationships.
