Sequel to "Bumped" really enjoyed both books! Interesting premise. favorite passage: "This isn't polite talk!", exclaims Ash "Isn't polite?" Melody asks incredulously. "Isn't polite? I'm not farting at the dinner table! I'm talking about baby trafficking! That's beyond impolite. It's inhumane!..." Loved the ending, could see it coming 200 pages in advance and it's only a 300 page book, but that's ok. Good endings are, well... good. ;)

I'm not sure what to say about this just yet. Still absorbing the story! Thomas Builds-The-Fire goes through a journey of finding himself after he finds Robert Johnson, a blues guitarist, walking down the road by himself. Johnson leaves Thomas his guitar, and that's when music takes over Thomas's life. He starts a band with two of his rez buddies, Victor and Junior, and lets two Flathead Indian sisters, Chess and Checkers, join after they finish their first drunken show. The story follows them as they continue with trying to make it big as a band. It is a great example of how much music/art can affect the spirit. Another great tongue-in-cheek Alexie story that touches on alcoholism, Native American stereotypes, addiction in general and how to break from from it, relationships, and life on the reservation. I thought his use of dreams was interesting.

I am still working through this book - unfortunately I have not been able to dedicate solid time to it - it is a very good story, full of eco-"warfare" (not violent, though, more creative), and is getting more and more interesting, and more and more difficult to put down as I need to work!

Just finished this yesterday. It is the first in the series of three books so far, but is the second one I read. Since I already read Winter Rose, I'm afraid I knew some of the outcomes. However, that made no difference; I enjoyed finding out how it all came about. The character of Fee and her incredible rise in the tea world in such a short time, just as Joe rises in the fruit/vegetable world is probably not realistic time-line wise, but the rise of their fortunes is not so surprising. I loved how the story was interwoven with the Jack the Ripper story, and made the most of this historic mystery. I also loved the two settings of Whitechapel and New York City -- I think the setting is really what drove the characters and the plot, and would not have worked well set elsewhere. You really get a sense of the poverty and of the wealth and great class divide. The book is fast paced for a 500 page book, and it was hard to put it down, but I did anyway. I felt overall it was a very satisfactory read, and a heart-breaking/warming love story. What a series of mishaps keep these two apart!!!! If you like historical fiction, and like a good romance with a bit of mystery, this is a remarkable book. Just give yourself the time to read it, like a weekend or vacation (like I did).
Another good summer book..but a bit complicated..too many characters....

A touching story of books and a 20-year friendship begun and held together by letters. A must-read for bibliophiles! The movie version, starring Anne Bancroft and Anthony Hopkins is almost as good.
