I loved this book when I was little! Even now, I love it.

A Season to be SinfulA Season to be Sinful was published not long after the Compass Club series and there are so many similarities and patterns here that I hesitate to give this an "A" rating just on the basis of standardization alone. If I had read this book first though, I would have completely loved it. Some of the standby Goodman elements are here and luckily the ones I tend to like. Sherry is a fitting hero in that he's handsome, wealthy, smart, and compassionate to children and women, all the while hiding a dark past that makes him decidedly enigmatic. He does what Goodman's best heroes do, which is to provide comfort, protection and assistance to his beleaguered woman, and all without overstepping her rights to defend herself and her independence. Once Sherry and Lily really come together they are a dynamic force. Lily is a victim of sexual abuse, like many of Goodman's heroines, but she's also not completely victimized by the past and always focuses on her own survival as well as caring for others in need. I had some brief qualms about Lily's ability to push past the effects of sexual violence so quickly once she fell in love, but I didn't allow those to stop me from enjoying the romance here. I also had some reservations about the sheer ubiquity of the villain in that he's everywhere and involved in so many various plots, not to mention so over-the-top dastardly. How is it possible for one man to have his hand in everyone's backstory? After some eye rolling, I decided to let that go as well. Still, Lily & Sherry are among my favorite Goodman characters, and this is a compelling read.

A fascinating and fairly easy to follow history of World War One. Ever since I discovered the 'futility of war' poems by Sassoon and Wilfred Owen many decades ago, the horrors of this war in particular have saddened me deeply. The soldiers that had to live for months and years on end in conditions so terrible it practically defies understanding. This book by Winston Groom (he of Forrest Gump fame)is a very thought provoking and enlightening piece of work.

A very good collection of poetry from the last 30 years, all selected from winners of the Pushcart Prize. Some excellent poetry, much very good, and some that left me cold. The best poet in the volume whom I was not already familiar with has to be Li-Young Lee, whose poem "Furious Versions" stunned me.

This was such a worthy successor to the Kite Runner - and written from a woman's perspective . I felt drawn into the enclosed world of being an Afghani woman and outraged by the harsh treatment they received at the hands of men . However, the spirit, compassion and love shown by the women was truly inspiring and kept me reading. The end for both women was uplifting in their own ways and was satisfying .It is of course also beautifully written.

It's a graphic novel about stories and how they impact the real world. I mean, one of the lines is "Stories are the only thing worth dying for", and at that point it becomes rather hard for me to be objective, even without the Kipling/Wilde/Twain cameo. It's interesting, it's smart, it's original as hell. It's clearly setting up for more developments, both in terms of plot and in terms of the world. The protagonist's name is Tommy Taylor, both in the story and in the story-the-story's-about. He's a man who (rather unhappily) makes a living off the fact that he's identified with/as the young wizardly protagonist of the books his father wrote... sort of as if Rowlings had mysteriously vanished and her son Harry Potter had grown up as the target of a lot the fannish devotion. He's working the convention circuit when a young woman stands up during Q&A and asks him (view spoiler) Things develop from there. I hesitated a bit before putting the "horror" tag on the book, but decided in favour of it. It's slightly distant--horror does show up, but it seems to more often be something the story is about than something that's happening in the story. Still, I think it counts.

With the great title I expected the book to be much funnier. It was way over-the-top and not LOL funny.
