Interesting historical perspective on Texas, though fictional

Wonderful historical fiction. So well written, the main character is atypical, very well portrayed... Her relationships with the other characters all complicated, real. Seductive story. So interesting, it must be true. I want to read more by this author.

Objectively, there was nothing wrong with this book. Subjectively, I made no connection with it. I read the whole thing in a state of neutrality. At least it wasn't long.

An author new to me. I like his quirky descriptive, often metaphorical language: An angel flitted through the room; A bolt of electricity darted into the night every time the door opened; Three black girls stood in a corner waiting for something to happen; Cars swished by...." Dark, detailed, a page turner. I will read more of his writing. Main character: Erik Winter.
Yeah I'm reading the series. I like it too. What?

What happens when the world can no longer use cell phones because everyone who was using a cell phone got turned into a feral, homicidal killing machine? Well, things go to hell in a handbasket, basically. This is easily one of King's best books in recent memory--not overblown, not too long, not too heavily cliched, and creepy as hell at points. What was really fascinating to me was his picture of American society crumbling into chaos--it's so heavily influenced by 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. It's so of the moment, I could see it being looked at twenty years from now as an illustration of the American Psyche, circa 2007.

After rediscovering the series last summer, this anthology is the only book that has ever caused me to burst into laughter in a public space as an adult. Sustained laughter. I have difficulty thinking clearly when Arthur is describing the biscuit incident to Fenchurch. This may be more indicative of a personal taste in humor than a moment of absolute comedic genius, but come on....if this man can even make Richard Dawkins laugh, he must have been doing something right.

This was a tough book to read. I thought it would be fun like the musical, but it is nowhere close! It really takes a long time to get into this book, but once you do, the story is beatuifully written and really fascinating. (If you like the wizard of oz, of course)

Talk about "nothing happens." As a writer, I've heard editors whining about the importance of not only plot points, but many of them. However, I'm 2/3rd's through this and cannot find ANY plot points! The result, a slow, slow read, even if I do like the characters. OK, now I'm at the point where the plot unravels a bit with the narrator and her grandmother, Georgia. You see it coming a mile away, but you're relieved when you get there. Finished it. Geeeesh, did it take forever to get to the inevitable and predictable end? Yes, but I still liked it because of it's take on love.
