A very disjointed read. It wasn't until almost 3/4 of the way thru it that I actually became interested in the characters and what was happening with or to them. The ending was unsatisfying in that it just set up the next installment of the series. This book might have been more enjoyable if I had read the preceding one. I won't be looking for it or the sequel though...

orignally read this book for a book report i had to do in the 6th grade. Needless to say, i didn't get it! as i've become more and more interested in buddhism, in life, and in death, it made more sense to pick up Siddhartha again. Just finished it, and I love it. So simply and beautifully written, Hesse relays the journey of a being in his life's journey's search for meaning. Poetically written and truly timeless - i find myself confused in my life's direction, and i will surely pick up and read Siddhartha again.

I liked Garber's analysis of Shakespeare and Modern Culture overall, even if most of the book was awash in lit crit jargon. Her insights are most relevant when performing close readings of humanities texts; when she attempts to critique business or mathematical readings of Shakespeare, then Garber reveals herself to be out of her depth.

I suppose I'm partial to books that don't have fairytale endings. Stories where characters are flawed, situations are frustrating, and life isn't rose and birds pooping out rainbows. I enjoy books where I can escaped into a world where characters are responsible and such and enjoy it. But I must admit that I do enjoy books that while I'm escaped into its world I can also come back to reality with still realistic expectations.
