This is a book with a gimmick that, to my amazement, managed to almost always be bigger than just that. For this, I credit Niffenegger's artful ordering of the story and the fact that she created bold three-dimensional characters. If I could rate a 3.5, I would! Towards the middle though, the book did drag - the reader already knows what is going to happen and the story was just marking time. For about 150 pages, I had much more fun considering the implications of Henry's style of time travel than I did reading the book. What's most impressive in this book is that Niffenegger created this theme, managed to keep all the pieces organized, and made everything make sense without spending lots of time explaining the nuances of her theme. However, I didn't find the meat of the story - the romance - very compelling. Clare's love for Henry is a child's crush because she knows they'll get married, and when Henry meets Clare in his present, it's just because she already knows they will marry. This is thought-provoking in a 'what came first, the chicken or the egg' sort of way, but loving someone because you know you're supposed to isn't very romantic. If this story is about love, then it fails, but if it's about waiting and longing and determinism vs. free will, then it succeeds. Themes: time travel, love, free will vs. determinism, waiting, longing, family, time

What could be an interesting topic, the guy makes boring and rambling. I couldn't get through it. Didn't even overly like the cd of songs that came with it.

I love time travel stories and this is one of the best! Terrific tale and some interesting history. And this is one book where I absolutely adored the ending. I am more than occasionally disappointed by books’ endings, but this one was perfect.

I love this book. I must have read it 5 times as a child and had at least two copies. One worn out one and another "good copy" for my shelf.

This is the fourth book in the South Seas Adventure series. This series is about the adventures of Abby Kendall, a young teenage girl, and her family and friends as they travel the South Seas in the late 1840s. It's June of 1848, and thirteen-year-old Abby Kendall, her younger sister Sarah, and their friends Luke and Kini have returned to Hawaii with their gold from California, but they are too late to save the Kendall ranch. Abby's parents and uncle decide to search for a new home elsewhere in Hawaii, so they all sail to the island of Kauai to learn about the sugar business. They find jobs with the wealthy Rees Cutter, who owns a sugar plantation. Rees Cutter seems so kind and generous, but Abby and Luke hear bad things about him from some of the workers. In addition, they begin to suspect he may be involved in business dealings with the cruel and greedy Cap'n Jim Canter. Abby and Luke are determined to find out what's really going on at the Cutter Plantation, and their quest for the truth leads them into another dangerous adventure. Readers who enjoyed the first three books about Abby will be sure to enjoy this one as well. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy historical fiction. I love the unique settings and likable characters featured in this series, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books to find out what adventures await Abby and her friends next.
