Because Michael Alexander asked and he's a cool dude (a little cleaned up from my comments version): War for the Oaks's the kind of book where I end up feeling like I'd have to be exactly like the main character to really love the story, because it has so wish-fulfillment. In this case, the main character Eddi is an aspiring musician. I'd have to be youthful in the 80s and into rock and roll and jamming into my guitar and fantasy (well, I guess I am the last one) to really appreciate the book fully like I really wanted to. But that being said, I enjoyed the atmosphere Emma Bull crafted, both on the 'urban' side* with the travails of gigging (even if the constant name-dropping of rock songs was totally lost on me, Bull seems to speak from a place of real experience) and on the 'fantasy' side with the war between the fairy courts (where sometimes Bull crafts some really beautiful language and spooky situations). *The Minneapolis setting is particularly refreshing (not only because I've never read anything set in Minneapolis, but also because it's integrated into the story and Emma Bull really seems to love it there). **She's good at set-up but does tend to pull punches at the conclusion where it should get tighter but instead she falls back onto purple prose. But yeah, War for the Oaks is a good example of the urban fantasy genre. It's not trashy, but it's also the kind of book where you always get to know what the main character is wearing (and it's actually quite entertaining because it's always an hideous-sounding 80s ensemble featuring a signature piece that Eddi inevitably found at a thrift/vintage store), along with her love interest (whose fashions tend more towards the hilariously romantic, but it's the kind of story that's self-aware enough that Eddi calls him on it). Rating: 3.5 stars

Had to read this for Comp II class and I will admit it was difficult to get into at first, however the Nigerian way of life started to really have an effect on me by Part 2. What with the Achebe's purpose in writing the novel and my love for different cultures, I found this to be a thought-provoking read deemed worthy of holding a place on the required reading lists for high schools and/or universities.

The only reason I picked If I Stay off of the library shelf was because I heard an enormous amount of buzz surrounding it. That seems to be a habit for me lately. Anyway, I really didn't know much about the book. I had a very vague idea what it was about, which I'm glad, because if I would gave read the synopsis or something, I probably would not have checked it out. Reading the synopsis now, I realize that it doesn't sound like my personal cup of tea. Therefore, I was taken on a stunning adventure with this book that exceeded all of my expectations, which rarely happens when books are built by the hype. Get ready for a gush-fest, because when it comes to good books, I've been known to gush with the best of them. If I Stay was one of those books that grabbed me from the very first page and held me like an unshakable vise. I think I may have set a new world record on how fast it is possible to turn pages! I read this book in one sitting, afraid that if I put it down it would magically dissolve or something. I had to go to bed after finishing it last night, but I wasn't worried about writing the review, because I was certain that this story was going to remain inprinted in my mind for weeks to come. The plot was original. The idea that Mia gets to make the choice whether to live or die seems rather hard to pull of to me. There were so many directions it could have gone. It could have been totally unrealistic or annoying, or so many other bad adjectives. Instead, it was tear-jerking, heart-wrenching, and just plain gorgeous. I felt Mia's pain, I cried for her. At first it did seem a little silly, because if you could choose to stay in the world or go, why wouldn't you want to stay? But Mia's got reasons. Tons of them. And the fact that she wants to go becomes completely understandable, and a part of me wanted her to go, just so she didn't have to deal with everything that was going on around her. Of course, I really really really wanted her to stay. Mia's narration of the story is perfect. There's a noticeable tinge of nostalgia, darkness, insecurity, longing...you name it. She was just a delight to read about. This book is told a lot through memories, which is a style that I have always loved. This is only the second separate book series that I've read that is like that, and I loved it just as much! There is a beautiful romance in this book (once again, mostly told in memories, but the parts that are happening in the present are, well, beautiful) but not an overwhelming amount. Adam is sexy and sweet and wonderful, and I am so excited that the sequel, Where She Went, is told in his point of view. This book is one of my new favorites, and I'm not even going to add a "Reasons I Liked It" section, because I cannot pick out individual reasons. The prose was breath-taking, heart-breaking, and pure magic. I loved absolutely every aspect! You can see this review and many more on my blog BookBreather.

I liked it, just because it was Marsh and it took place in a theater and she does mysteries there so very well.

So this book was not as good as "Prep", but it was still entertaining and a quick read. I got a little frustrated as the author discussed Hannah in the 3rd person...but much of the dialogue was written in the first person. I wished she could have written it more consistently. That said- I enjoyed following Hannah from age 14-28...in many different cities (including Boston!). I will give her newest book a try next.

Posted on Oh, For the Love of Books! Short and Sweet: Let me first start off by saying that the idea behind this book is fascinating! So unique and engrossing. Destiny is a kick-butt and sassy girl with a huge secret. While I figured it out pretty soon, I was interested in the reasons behind the secret. This book was full of steamy, tension-filled goodness! Whew! But while I liked that, it was also a downfall. The romance of the story kind of turned me off. Bring in the cursed love triangle! At least in this one I feel as if she knows who she'll choose. I just hope she doesn't change her mind in the next book. Also, this has a slight case of insta-love. Well, not so much "insta-love" but almost (if that makes any sense). She doesn't fall in love with him the first time she meets him, but pretty darn close. At least I understand why. They are the same and the only two people like that so she feels a connection, but still, me no likey. Overall I really enjoyed it. The plot was so intriguing and I'm waiting impatiently to learn where it goes from here. While I'm on the fence about the romance, I still enjoyed the characters. I can't wait to learn what's in store next for these guys :)
