This is a great book for all those who love Russian culture. It is a difficult read however, and probably worth reading more than once. I recommend reading it on ones own before looking at any kind of review or guide. The contrast between the main characters is what I enjoyed the most. Light and dark, faith and atheism, its all here. It's the only Doestoevsky I've read but I understand that it is one of the best.

Set in post-WWII America, a Japanese-American is on trial for the murder of a local (German-American) fisherman. The trial is somewhat predictable, but the more interesting story plays out in the lives of the community members as each explores his or her own role in the perpetuation of racism. I enjoyed the journey and also appreciated his poetic language which heightened the sensory experience of the read.

I am ashamed to tell you under what circumstances I read this tome, but the date implies I was in high school, and a boy was involved. (Reading books to impress boys? Is nothing sacred?) Anyway, it's cool to read cause it's such a weird brainy classic but the story line is one step up from Guiding Light and the whole thing is thinly veiled capitalist propaganda. Makes you feel dirty.

I really liked the feeling of this, it is not like what the title might indicate. It's pretty, can one say that of a book? It gave me, mostly, pretty pictures inside my head. Perhaps I will read it again in some years, then I will probably inderstand more of it and enjoy it more.
