Ölümle Randevu - Agatha Christie TrendKitaplar Kütüphanesi

Tarafından yazılmış kitap Tarafından: Altın Kitaplar

In many ways this book is a one-trick pony and it quickly gets tiring reading essentially the same joke over and over and over and over and over for 400+ pages. The redeeming quality here is that it's a good joke. With the many memorable quotes and keen observations the book does propel itself along, albeit slowly. The sequencing of the scenes was a bit confusing to me, one character having died earlier and up and speaking in the next. (Not the instance of the character not dying but everyone treating him as if he had). There was quite a bit of death in this one. I know that's what Heller's motive was - confusing scenes to show the chaos of war, the contradictory words entering ears and leaving mouths, making sense to no one, and the only "sane" characters being completely insane. Heller made his ultimate point with this book that it's mad for one to go to war and going to war will make one mad. I got that pretty early on. This whole book was insane, really. I grew frustrated with the helplessness of Yossarian because of the incompetence and irrational behaviors of others, namely his superiors. It reminded me too much of my own childhood. Despite this, I couldn't grow to love Yossarian or any of the other characters. I think he waited too long to make his stand. It was pleasant to see his complacency broken and him finally taking steps to rebel but I can't forgive him for walking by the imminent crimes in Rome. I realize he was in a mental place far removed from this world; however, it's a poor excuse for inaction against injustice. The blatant crimes against women disturbed me, too. The one character I thought the most insightful was the old man in the whorehouse, who was the only one to make any sense, whatsoever. And all he did was transpose words in platitudes. So simple, huh? Maybe we should think about that a little more.
