This series is so odd but I enjoy it. It focuses more on the interactions between Sunako and four hot guys. There seems to be a slowly forming bond between the group. And Sunako is slowly becoming "beautiful" more often. Maybe she is becoming more comfortable with herself.

It started off pretty well, but I really lost interest in the chapter on the corpus callosum. I have no desire at all to finish this book. I just wasn't expecting so much review of historical science with charts and data from the past 2 centuries presented ad nauseum. I kept waiting for the chapter to get to the point (or make the point that brain size doesn't tell us anything) and MOVE ON. It was the lack of moving on that killed it for me.

I really wanted to find a copy of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, but the library didn't have it so I picked up this novel by the same author instead. I don't know. There's a lot of people running into each other, a lot of connections between strangers, and some cool place descriptions, but the characters all felt a little flat to me. The dialogue seemed too trite, and some of the plots were left unresolved at the end. Perhaps the former can be ascribed to translation difficulties, but probably not the latter, right? And really, I wouldn't have minded the ambiguity if the characters had been a little more interesting, rather than rattling off speeches that sound like they come from "The Young Actor's Monologue Book." Of course, I did read it remarkably quickly, so maybe I was passing over some of the intricacies or subtleties, but if I had to guess I'd say that those might not have made it over from the original Japanese anyway (if indeed they were there to start with). But the whole "camera" device was pretty neat, I have to give him that.
