** spoiler alert ** It took a little bit to get used to the narrative style in this novel but once I did I found it a refreshing change. Overall I thought it was well done, the plot moved along fairly well. Bear's gradual progression from denial to acceptance felt more realistic than many stories where characters immediately accept and embrace their new-found sexuality. The internal monologues worked well for the most part but became a little overdone near the end. One big plot point that really should have had some hint of resolution was the mother's motivation for doing what she did instead of this sudden appearance and then a fair amount of time goes by and you're still left wondering why, especially when she doesn't challenge Bear at the end. The book did garner a rare laugh-out-loud moment: "I told the Kid as much and had gotten as far as to pick up my phone and was about to press in Otter’s number when Ty grabbed the phone out of my hand and threatened to tell Otter that I liked to be spanked during sex. This proceeded to lead us on a long tangent where I had to have him explain to me how he knows about stuff like people getting spanked during sex. He said he might have heard it mentioned while watching MSNBC. I told him he was grounded from watching the news channels for a week. That’s where this whole sidebar should have ended, but then I was forced to explain S & M and bondage to my little brother, who was persistent on the topic, and who then kept staring at me with mounting horror when I finally did explain, and I realized I had maybe gone too far, and we had to spend the next five minutes with me swearing to God that I had never nor would I ever attempt to do anything like that. He might now be the only nine-year-old who has heard the terms “cock ring” and “fisting.” My parenting skills are unparalleled." This had me giggling for quite some time and I couldn't tell MY kid why :)

Furuba! I saw the anime way before I read the manga, and I was happy to find that the manga has waaay more going on. More back story, and a massive plot twist/discovery that blows things outta the water. Also incredibly pretty. Seriously, Furuba has some pretty bishies. Woot. Anywho, the story of a simple girl with a heart of gold whose destiny is bound by a family with a dark and secret curse. Great manga.

Wish I could give this 2 and a half stars, because it was somewhere between a two and a three for me. The story was interesting but it just didn't flow and at times it was not very believable. I don't think women, in general, are as naive as the the three women portrayed in this novel.

Admittedly I was annoyed with Margaret for a good portion of the book because she had a tendency to be spoiled or at least annoying and after reading a lot of Victorian novels who pontificate about the 'angel of the hearth' I guess it was weird to read about a flawed character. By the end of the novel though I was thoroughly in love with Mr. Thornton and all of his misgivings and despicableness. In fact, he has almost overtaken Mr. Darcy's place in my heart. I think that if North and South had been slightly less complex (what with its talk of unions, city v. country, gender norms, religion, social responsibility etc) it would have easily surpassed the love story and popularity that is Elizabeth and Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. I highly recommend this book to any Victorian novel enthusiast. Compared to Bleak House, Villette or Middlemarch it is a quick enough read.

Gladwell says that what separates the most successful people from others who might start out with just as much intelligence and talent is basically luck. These include the good fortune to be born into a time or a society when certain opportunities were available, a culture where parents are able to devote time and resources to their children, or the set of cultural legacies one inherits about how the world works. This reminded me, on a smaller scale, of Guns, Germs and Steel, which posits that civilizations in a certain swath of the world (including the Middle East, the so-called cradle of civilization) prospered because conditions were more favorable than in Africa, South America, or parts of Asia. In other words, they got the breaks, which enabled them to advance by dint of hard work. It's also like Freakonomics in that factors under the surface, which take some digging to identify, can explain behavior. The point in exploding the myth of the "self-made" person is not to minimize anyone's intelligence, talent, or effort, but to recognize that society is deprived of the contributions of those whose circumstances don't let them realize their potential. How can we make opportunity truly equal if we don't understand what causes inequities?

i don't normally like short stories, but this anthology was very entertaining. there are several story poems in it--poetry is another thing i'm not usually into. he's so dark, i love it. there's also a description in the introduction of where his ideas for each story came from. my favorites were "Babycakes" and "Snow, Glass and Apples".
