It is a good book as it has some great descriptions and metaphors regarding today life. The only weak point of the book, which is relatively big in my respect, is its lack of integrity. The writer has started some subjects, but never has ended them, or even continued them. Her scattering writing style sounds a little sloppy -and even more! However, she has a great feminine view on every aspects and details of what she describes. I like it!

It was okay, it was a slow read until 3/4ths of the way through. Gives you alot to think about though. I can really see that happening.

I love Joyce Carol Oates but this memoir about her husband's death and her widowhood should have been edited WAY down. Quite repetitive. I understand she was trying to capture the repetitious "What ifs?" that occur during grief but after a third or fourth go 'round of the same thought/action/memory I was OK to move on in her process. It reads like a long, unedited personal journal where every thought is captured and recaptured--cathartic for her but not engaging to the reader. Not as captivating or thought provoking as Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking.

4.5 stars Sexy, fun, great heroes, lovely dialogues and a fast paced plot. What more to ask? I'm definitely going to read the next ones in the series.

Oskar Schell is an obsessed little guy who is trying to find the lock to the key his father had. Oskar's father died in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Towers and through Oskars diligence and creative exploring he meets many people who deal with tragedy in their own way. This book uncovers a cross-section of America and the beauty of her 'open door' policy. Richly written, a little hard to follow, but an incredible journey.

I love this book and have read it over and over. I enjoy the reality of being a virus hunter. The effect it has on people around you. Plus a good scientific read.

This book has more going for it than I'd originally thought it might. I expected a cute romance between middle-aged people, which it is, but the way in which they recognize and struggle against social constraints has more bite and punch than I would have expected. The conversation the Major has with the vicar on p. 271 is chilling (". . . people get into these relationships -- different backgrounds, different faiths, and so on -- as if it's not a big issue. They want the church's blessing and off they go into the sunset as if everything will be easy") as are the moments when Major Pettigrew realizes that the traditions, people, and way of life he's always loved have become strangers. The truest and best thing in his life is the love he feels for Jasmina Ali, who has plenty of her own and community baggage to handle. Major Pettigrew is cowardly and then brave in a world that isn't as rosy as I might have thought judging by the book's cover.
