I am reading this for my book group - which always makes me stretch in terms of my choices. Mary Oliver is a close observer of nature and is a poet. Neither very comfortable for me but I am working on it. Here is a sample of her thoughts that I like very much:"What does it mean that the earth is so beautiful? And what shall I do about it? What is the gift that I should bring to the world? What is the life I should live?"

This was a good short story, whipcord-tense despite being under five thousand words. But shame on the publisher for using the cover elements of the Newsflesh series for this story, which has shit-all to do with that series. It was a cheap ploy to get readers to pay for it under the visual pretense that you were reading something from that series, and it really fucks me off.

This is the first Bruno book. The writing is straight forward and sparse, but the story is good. Bruno meets and works with Isabelle after a muslim man, Hamid, who fought with the French army is found murdered with a swastika carved in his chest. Bruno investigates and realizes the murder may be related to Hamid's earlier life. Bruno manages to take care of his village, rescue the doctor's son, who was suspected by the Paris officials, and charm the women of the town.

All of Davidson's books are terrific! Great mysteries and yummy food references combined. Perfect for reading snuggled under the covers on a chilly winter evening.

The last survivor of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire dies at the age of 106. She is survived by her granddaughter Rebecca, and Rebecca's long-time lover, George, a rather eccentric but extremely successful composer. There is one extremely annoying character in the book, a feminist researcher, whose only purpose is to make the two main characters re-examine the artifacts left behind by the grandmother. There are two rather pointless "interviews" that discuss George's work. The only point of one of the interviews is that it mentions that George and Rebecca have married and adopted a child. There is a slight twist at the end, but this is another one of those books that would have benefited from a good editor.

I read this book instead of studying for finals in my second semester of college. Which was a good idea, I think. I love Esther's cynical, and sometimes derisive, attitude toward the world. In her eloquence, she makes everyone around her appear insane, which might very well be the case. "I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant loosing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet."

Not sure what to say about Ortega y Gasset other than that he's a conspicuous elitist, without necessarily being aristocratic or absolutely class-conscious in his elitism; the mass-man is the self-satisfied man, the man who doesn't look beyond himself for meaning or challenge (shades of Lukacs' "transcendental homelessness") -- which is a state of affairs that comes about through the brute fact of plenitude: more people enjoying more goods as their rights (rather than as fruits of their own struggle). Not sure entirely if this will be useful to think about in terms of crowd-theory, but I guess it's nice to see the seething resentment of the crowd in Le Bon become an articulated hope for the coming war with the mass in Ortega y Gasset. (And doesn't that old-style aristo naming convention already makes Jose seem multiple?)
