This book is vary breezy and fresh in its style. Totally free of pretension. The author lets you know exactly what they think, in some cases declaring a masterwork, and in others a shoddy job. And pretty frank about Rivera's self fictionalizing promotional fantasies. Mexico was a pretty politically turbulent place, and some of the fictions and self reinvention were for personal and professional survival. Very good selection of illustrations

Some parts of this book receive 5 stars! I don't love history reading and a few sections of the book veer off in that direction. However, the bulk of the book is an amazing, heart-wrenching, well written story about a Hmong family in the US with a daughter who has epilepsy.

This book was a surprise but also a deception. You can divide it in two halves: the story of Vittorio and that of his children. If the first half was well done and revealed itself as a surprise, as I didn't think this book would caught me like it did, the second half became a disappointment. A train leaves from Salonika, in the beginning of WWII, with documents which, in the bad hands, could endanger de faith of millions and that way be used as a weapon. Such documents were so dangerous that many died to protect them. Between those victims, is the family of Victor Fontine, born Vittorio Fontini-Cristi, the only one to escape alive and who resolves to revenge his family. Not knowing about the box containing the documents so many are looking for, and in the middle of WWII, Victor does what he can to help the Allies destroying the German war machine, which is probably the most interesting part of all book, while gets some information about the train here and there. 30 years later, it's his children, the twins (or Gemini) Andrew and Adrian, the ones left to continue the search for the documents. For characters that gave the title to the book, they're poorly developed as characters, with the author making use of the cliché evil twin/good twin. And you can imagine the end. Even the secret hid in the documents leaves a bittersweet taste, but is far more interesting and poses more questions about our faith in the Church than the question from The Da Vinci Code, in my opinion.

This inspiring story about Caitlin's faith will make you realize some things in your own life, like it did for me.

Jan 2016 - hmm, this was unmemorable enough that I forgot I'd read it!

Takes some familiar figures (George Washington, Anne Hutchinson, Benedict Arnold) in early American history and some less familiar (Hannnah Dustin, James Wilson) and effectively develops story-filled narratives that shows national fabric that helped shape early days of American spirit and revolution. Good vignettes that help the U.S. social studies teacher relate to students the struggles and outcomes of early American history.

Again, this was a fun series to read. This book was really interesting but not quite as philosophical as The Long Walk.

I am Jake Barnes. I'm getting used by Brett Ashley. I'm the trout in the river that was once firm, the bull that was gored and abandoned by the herd. Okay, not really. However, Jake is right up my alley: your typically disillusioned, desirous, sad figure looking for a purpose. I know a lot of people hate characters like this, but these are my favorite types of protagonists. Anyways, back to the book. A lot of great themes in here, and a lot better than I expected.

Yet another installment in the increasingly hilarious Series of Unfortunate Events books have I savoured, enjoyed, and giggled over. It's not that I'm unsympathetic to the plight of the unfortunate Baudelaire children, because nothing could be further from the truth. Violet and Klaus and Sunny are clever and resourceful and deserve better than they get, but the adults are so dreadful - evil, or incompetent, or oblivious - that it's impossible not to laugh. Favourite exchange from this one: Mr. Poe: ...your aunt Josephine lost her husband recently... It didn't seem polite to ask how she became a dowager. Well, let's put you in a taxi. Violet: What does that word mean? Mr. Poe: I'm surprised at you, Violet. A girl of your age should know that a taxi is a car which will drive you someplace for a fee. Poor fearful Aunt Josephine. Never mind, she's better off out of this cruel and dangerous world. Maybe she's with her beloved Ike.
