My best friend Erin introduced me to David Sedaris nearly a decade ago. I hadn't read this one yet, though it has been out for quite a while. It's what one expects of a Sedaris book: hilarious! I always wonder if all of his stories are true, but you know, it doesn't really matter. The man has a gift for language! My favorite story is probably "The Girl Next Door."

I really wanted to like this book. Finishing the book was a struggle, mostly because I didn't really care what happened to any of the characters. Shteynberg can write hilariously profane sentences, but the novel that emerges from these sentences feels slight. Our narrator Misha is always on the move, bouncing from one tragic place to another. Surprise deaths push the plot along, but no one is ever forced to confront the consequences of anything that happens. In violation of one of the basic rules of fiction, each new chapter seems unrelated to the ones that precede it. I was also turned off by the descriptions of women in this book. While Misha's attitude towards "ethnic" women (Rouenna, Lyuba, Nana) can be viewed as natural expression of his voracious appetites, it comes across as both condescending and fetishistic.

I’m not going to reveal which is which, you read the book!) who were police partners until she ran away from their budding relationship: he was married at the time, if not happily. Then a man they’d helped put in prison is back on the streets and vowing revenge, so he goes looking for her to protect her. Things hot up as they are confined together in her house, waiting for the villain to turn up. Some humour, some hot sex and a bit of action.

I felt so bad for Jaime, that he felt so hopeless that he had to end it. I wish he could have felt in his heart the way he saw in his head that he was loved by everyone except his mentally ill mother. It was so sad that at the end that was the final straw, his mother's rejection of him. I'm also worried that Damian deals with his stress by using drugs. That is something that it is good for Matt to know so he can help Damian deal. A good story though often sad and sometimes it's hard to understand what is really going through the minds of people who have to deal with rough home life situations. Everyone handles things so differently. Jaime seemed like the strong one, always there to help his family, his friends, his love, but in the end he couldn't bend, he just snapped. I found the jumping back rough, especially since some times it wasn't in the same timeline but it helped a little to see how he was trying to cope. I recommend this but be aware, lots of angst often very sad.

This book was recommended to me by a Catholic sister who is the librarian in our grade school. She loved the book but said it wasn't appropriate for a grade school library. To be honest, although this is written for kids, I think this is a book that will be most appreciated by the target audience's mothers or even grandmothers. This is not to say I didn't like the book. I loved it! But most of the kids that I know have never seen a nun in full habit unless they've watched an old movie. They have no idea about the changes brought about by Vatican 2 or the struggles of the emerging feminists. I think a case could be made to buy it as a historical fiction candidate, but I can't see getting many kids to read it. I hope I'm wrong because I think that many young teens would enjoy the story if they understood the background. Mary Clare, the sixth grade aspiring Mother Superior, is hilarious. Fixmer does a wonderful job of portraying her angst over her sins and transgressions while also making her a typical tween who is envious of her friends and angry about her numerous chores and responsibilities. I loved her parents as well. Although her father yelled alot, he was also a loving and caring role model who was being asked to adapt to quite a few changes. Her mother also was far from the stereotypical devoted wife who accepted everything that came her way. She was a strong, independent woman at a time when this "just wasn't done." If you grew up Catholic or always wanted to peek into the life of those loud, boisterous neighbors with the holy water in their living room this is the book for you.

Bu biraz hayal kırıklığı yarattı. Bu cildi o kadar uzun süre okumak için bekliyordum ki bu bir hayal kırıklığıydı. Önceki ciltlerden daha kısaydı ve sonunda 50 sayı için komut dosyasıyla yoğun bir şekilde dolduruldu ve fazladan 30 sayfa verdi. Gerçi Bigby ve Snow'un evlendikleri için mutluyum. Sanırım sadece daha fazlasını bekliyordum. Beni rahatsız eden bir şey, Snow, çocukları doğduktan sonra karakter gelişiminin çoğunu kaybetmiş gibi görünüyor. Umarım, bir sonraki cilt daha iyi olacaktır.
