This is the first novel that made an impact on me in high school. The absurdity and the incompetence in Cat's Cradle are real and happening today. I remember reading at least half of the book with a raised eyebrow and an unbelieving smirk. And the ending doesn't disappoint. It's as distubingly ironic as it is left field.

This is a sequal to HOLES by Louis Sachar. It doesn't really have Stanley in it, but Armpit. It is about one of the other campers at Camp Green Lake, but after he was home. He scams people buying and selling concert tickets (mainly X-Ray) and ends up in a whole mess with the singer. I liked it and it was a fast read.

As an old Korean era Jarhead I would rate this book as so-so. If you want to know what it was really like at that time I would suggest reading GOOD BY DARKNESS by William Manchester. He was a Marine that was there and experienced it all first hand. A good writer also. He also wrote AMERICAN CEASER another very good book. I saw the movie when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton and frankly did not think much of it. Tab Hunter made a piss poor Marine.

When I rate it as "I liked it," that's an average. There were parts I loved, and parts I didn't like. It makes me want to read a Palahniuk memoir. It came across as a John McPhee, Howard Stern (as an adjective - not a pejorative), David Rakoff, Dan Savage hybrid. Some of the stories seemed unnecessarily graphic, others were tame and insightful. The intro gives me an enormous amount of respect for him. The first section was mostly good; the middle mostly a bore, and the third section just .... well, was great.
