A completely new spin on the preface to The Wizard of Oz by Gregory Maguire. With a new point of view in the eyes of the young Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba) and the young Glinda, as well as all future comings such as flying monkeys and brooms, the development of Oz comes into play that not only stimulates the intellectual mind, but also the imagination of those who like to play around with possibilities. The incorporation of a political arena and a history that somewhat resembles that of Orwell's 1984 and various other civil wars throughout the world lends an interesting twist to the plot, as it is the environment of such a political upheaving that causes each "witch" to be who they are in the Wizard of Oz. However, this is not a story without romance, or betrayal, or adultery, or loyalty. It does, in fact, incorporate everything that can be conceivable to a young adult, someone who is undergoing change and so forth. An alltime favorite that is now a hit-Broadway musical with tickets that cost more than my plane ticket to NYC, I highly recommend this book (as well as the soundtrack).

same problem as 1984...this is two books in one. i would have liked to see both stories interwoven from the beginning, much like a movie would have. i think this book is important for reasons other than it's literary qualities.

This book was a real eye-opener and well written but very depressing I thought. I won't give anything away in here, but I just want to say that it doesn't make you think the world is a very good place (which it isn't). I usually like books that make me feel better about the world! I can handle sad and I LOVE books that make me cry but this was too sad for me.

Pretty good. Off-the-wall and hard to characterize. Kind of an accounting primer, but entertaining, too. I do, however, take offence at Hovey's narrator's choice for most hellish singer. I LIKE Justin Timberlake!
