I love this collection, particularly the Glass family stories; I deduct one star for "De Daumier Smith's Blue Period" and "Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes." He is most insightful when he's with the Glasses (maybe because Buddy is him?) and of course the final moment of "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" informs every other moment for the Glasses. I wrote in my review of Franny and Zooey how the war is an ominous presence, sometimes past, sometimes present ("For Esme, with Love and Squalor," one of the best), and always incredibly interesting. Read together with the other Glass stories, we have an appropriately fractured look into a fascinating family.

This is the author's first novel, and as such, it was not bad. It is the story of Jenny and Jared - reluctant partners in a seaplane charter business out of Seattle. Nothing earth shattering, but a quick read. When I looked for the author's web page, mentioned on the back cover, there is nothing there. I note that she said it took her 5 years to write this book. Makes me wonder if there will ever be another...

A really really valuable book. I'm afraid I'm a bit jaded about gardening books, having consumed so many over the years. There aren't very many that still hold my interest or contain new information for me. This one is an exception due to the author's innovative Passionate Garden Planning exercises. I return to these checklists again and again, discovering new or changing priorities each time.

This book was an autobiography. I chose this book because I read a different book by the same author, so I thought this one would be good also. This book is basically about this guy who lives in San Jose and grew up here. His name is Art Rodriguez. He goes through a lot before he is even eighteen. He tries to be a good kid, even as an adult he struggles to be make the right decisions for himself. In my opinion this book was both man versus self and man versus society. I chose this because both himself and his society had an effect on the choices he made and the person he became. He was fighting with himself to be a better person because of the surroundings he was placed in from the time he was little until the time he grew up. To me the theme is making the best out of the situations you are placed in. We don’t ask to be placed in situations or environments most times. This author showed how you can be in bad situations and still find a way to get through it and better yourself from it. This is something I can absolutely relate to. The author didn’t seem to use ant literary devices. The authors writing style is very vivid. He describes situations in great detail. Everything he explained I could see in my head. I thought the book was very good. It was a story I could relate to, it held my attention the whole time. It was also very easy to read. I would definitely recommend it to anyone it was a good book.

I'm a big fan of Christopher Buckley and was really looking forward to this book as well. True to form, Buckley takes a current hot topic and turns it on it's ear. The chapters describing Farfaletti's television broadcasts in Matar are hilarious. Unfortunately this book turned a bit too serious in the end for me- particularly with the gruesome murder of an innocent woman. Buckley is an author I'd turn to when looking for a light, funny, "take your mind of the real world" read. Still, a hilarious take on the Middle East, where I'm sure hilarity is hard to find.
