Nolan is working on a new job, set up by Planner, and is encouraged to take the old man's nephew, Jon, on as a partner> At twenty, he's a budding comic artist that has been supplementing his meager earnings by knocking over gas stations with a couple of partners. Not overly enthused, three amateurs?, he takes them on and begins planning the bank heist. As usual, things go awry as jealousy sets in with one woman and three men involved. Also, Nolan has been spotted by an old enemy, one of the "Family," that's had a contract on him for fifteen years and his death is in the works. A patching up goes awry and Nolan is nearly killed. Things are never easy for the old man who wants to retire, he's fifty, from the life of crime and simply run a club.

This book took me forever to read!!!! It was too weird to think about a person who jumps in and out of his own lifespan. Finally around page 400 the whole thing started to come together for me and I really wanted to read to last 100 or so pages.

Unless you can read French fluently you're dependent on the translation that's printed. The Penguin one is excellent and makes this book a gripping read and I couldn't put it down. Zola describes the conditions of the miners in shocking detail. I started to read the whole of the Rougon-Macquart series when I was in my twenties but I read a snippet of Germinal somewhere and that was it! I had to read it. La Bete Humaine is pretty close but germinal has greater detail and depth.

This is the most powerful piece of photojournalism I've ever read. Photographer Smith and his wife Aileen traveled to the poor Japanese fishing village of Minimata in 1971 and documented the tragedy of mercury poisoning among the villagers, caused by the dumping of toxic waste by industry since the 1950's. The result was powerful prose and heartbreaking photographs of a courageous people.
