My 8th grade son was reading this book for school so I decided to re-read it. I think the last time I read it was around 1984, so it was interesting to read again from an older and 21st century perspective. It is very powerful, although occasionally it drags a bit. I found the parts about Newspeak the most intriguing. It really speaks to the power of language, and the need of totalitarian governments to control language. Especially interesting in this day of global, personal, instant communication.

I suppose this was supposed to be propaganda for a lifestyle of casual sex with whoever comes your way. God knows I'm open-minded, but I don't think I've ever been so turned off by a naughty book. She seems completely checked out of all the fucking she's doing, often narrating from a distance as she's getting stuffed full of cock. If she think it's this wonderful, liberating thing she's discovered, she certainly isn't selling it very well. I winced and made my 'yuck' face through the whole thing.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It scared me. It is basically my worst nightmare and I made a list of stuff that I want to add to my food storage that I hadn't thought of before.

This book was just porn, boring, and uninteresting.

I'd read a few of Ms. Gore's zines before but when I picked up a copy of this I hadn't connected those to it. I'm not sure what I was expecting and it sort of met that feeling.. Dreamlike and flighty are probably the only words I have to describe this book.

I liked this book, but I didn't love it. I'm finding it harder to distinguish between all of her books. I think part of the reason is because I find it hard to relate to her female characters. They seem so unlikable: Jule's mom, Eva (the organizer of the competition), the female judge, and to some extent even Jules. They are either bitchy or so focused (on themselves, their career) that I find it hard to see what draws in the men that are attracted to them. Is it really just their good looks? Jules seemed too cold. Yes, she's had a rough past but I didn't feel like there was enough of an explanation as to why she ran so hot and cold with Max. Danny made a comment about her disastrous boyfriends and I really would have liked to have heard a bit more on that. Because I would have thought that effects of the incident with her mom could have been diminished somewhat by the care that she received from the Lunden family. She was able to see a healthy loving relationship. I also didn't get what caused Max to flee and never return for oh so many years. He has a couple of arguments with his father about the direction and the restaurant and just leaves? And his mom has to travel across the world to see him? The explanation was missing something for me. I did enjoy the supporting characters, Beck, Win along with Danny. The kitchen scenes when the team came together to help one another (or just give each other crap) were funny or touching. The next book in the series in Danny's story but it appears that he is being paired with Eva so I may just have to sit that book out until someone tells me the female characterizations improve. I'm tired of bitchy women.

Listened to it as an audio book. It was an excellent if somewhat bazaar and sad. There are so many ways a reader can respond to this fictional but true account of Ernest Hemingway's first marriage. I won't express my thought, other than to say that although I knew what would happen, I found the story to be riveting.

This was a fun, sweet read by one of my favorite authors. John is probably one of the nicest heroes that Diana Palmer has ever written. Yes he did pretend to be a modest cowboy, but you can't hold that against him, considering his past. From the beginning, he reaches out and helps Sassy with no underlying motives. He sees the good and the beauty in a small-town, simple girl who has sacrificed everything for her sick mother and adopted sister. Although I love her writing, and don't have any issues with it, some readers find Palmer's stories to be formulaic. If that is the case, they would probably enjoy this story because of its freshness. Also for the fact that John is not like her typical heroes, fighting falling in love with Sassy. He has a moment or two of apprehension as he realizes he is getting in deep, but surrenders fairly quickly to the knowledge that he is in love with Sassy and wants to spend the rest of their life together. The ending of this book reads like a fairy tale comes true, the downtrodden princess gets her happy ever after with the handsome rich prince, and all ends well. But isn't that why we read romance novels? At any rate, I couldn't help smiling as the last pages of this book went by my eyes.
