At first glance, The Soloist is a portrait of Nathaniel Ayers, the title character, a homeless musician suffering from mental illness. The author does a great job painting a picture of Nathaniel ... his personality, his illness, his circumstances, his history and his progress towards living a more "normal" life. And if it that was all the book offered, the Soloist would still be a book well worth your time to read. But what struck me was that The Soloist is also a portrait of the author, journalist Steve Lopez. As someone who worked as a counselor in a residential program for individuals with mental illness, I could identify so much with this story. Lopez's journey with Nathaniel is an excellent example of the emotional roller coaster the well intentioned face when trying to maintain a relationship with a schizophrenic.... the frustrations, the anxieties, the abuses clashing with compassion, idealism and the glimpses of people you wish you could help more.

Startlingly genuine and true-to-life, but the special needs of the protagonist seem to serve as a cover for the book's lack of nuance. As a slice-of-life portrait of autism, this is wholly original and refreshingly earnest. As a murder mystery, this is amateurish and shoddy. The two facets of the novel do not meld well, so the reader is left to decide which he or she prefers.

This book changed my life at 19 after my mother died. I still have the copy which is now 30 years old! Strange pic on the cover of the author, but the information contained (channelled info gained in the 60s at 'seances' as they were called originally) is mind blowing, reality shattering and absolutely riveting. Now it is more in line with what people would 'get' compared to the 70s when I read it as quantum physics is now explaining much of what is in the book. As I read this book I felt as if my mind was taking in information that it could not 'get' at that age. I knew it rang true, as much as my friends at the time thought I'd lost the plot, talking about reincarnation, parallel worlds, dreamscapes, reality creation etc. This is now more understood having had The Secret plus many other books out there talking about how to create your reality with your beliefs.

Another great book by White. Loved how she wove the history into this story. It had me guessing thru the end about Lulu. Good read. I think I may want to get this on audio books as well and listen to it again.

This book did a great job digging into the growth and development of one talented and interesting teenage girl, showing how our relationships and role models define us and teach us and fail us. The writing was full of pop culture references which will probably make it dated quickly as time goes on, but gives a realistic teen feel to the way the characters are portrayed. The romance was well done, with non-cliched descriptions that I could really feel and see, not just read. The premise wasn't anything too unique, but enjoyable story anyway. A really good debut novel!
