Another good book about vampires with intense scenes and a well rounded plot.

A fixer, in the parlance of the international press, is a local who "fixes" visiting journos with access. He provides them with translation and access - sometimes directly to the front lines of battle. In this case, however, what he fixes Joe Sacco with is his own sad story, and story of the shattered lives of some other figures in the Balkan war. As is customary, he weaves multiple stories into the major story line of the book, but in this case he jumps back and forth continuously, making it tough to follow. Despite this, and the difficulty that this native English speaker has with keeping the various Balkan names straight, the power of the tale is impossible to deny.

Definitively written by a woman who like Harlequin novel. Two gay man that think and act like a teenage girl in love with a rock star. Not totally bad, just really cliche, totally GaryStue. Too much use of the word 'perfect', at one moment I started to count them. And the first person point of view's not my favorite. The good point it's that they are cute together and I wanted them to be happy

I totally get why this book is so appreciated in the literary world. It's a well-crafted story about a specific time in Russian society that was critiqued by an author who had experienced its roughest aspects. The protagonist (?) represents the epitome of someone who has taken the full abuse of his surroundings and has become a demented, tortured human being because of it. It carries a powerful message, and delivers it well. The reason I gave it only two stars is simply because I didn't enjoy it, and I don't recommend it for someone who is looking for a downright good read. If you're looking to empathize with a downtrodden populace at a rough point in their history and really learn something about the human condition in a book, have at 'er. But if you're like me and you want a book that interests you while maybe teaching you something at the same time, look somewhere else. I realize that makes me sound like a shallow reader, but from a storyline perspective, this one is just tough. The main character is a psychopath (tough to relate to) and the story is intentionally written tediously in order to mirror the tedium of lower class Russian life at the time. Sound enjoyable?

This compelling and thought-provoking book takes the issue of race relations and turns it on its head, plus adds a set of star-crossed teen lovers and the threat of terrorism. It will pull you along as you race to see what happens next!

I must first note that I am sad to see the Parasol Protectorate series come to a close. While it may be argued that there is not much substance to these books, I have found them to be greatly entertainingly fluff reads. The novel featured a little bit of a lot of things: steampunk, Victorian, werewolves, vampires, humor, romance, absurd situations, mystery, intrigue, adventure, and more. Alexia Tarrabotti is a preternatural, a "soulless", whose lack of soul leads to her touch cancelling out the powers of those with excess soul. In other words, she can make vampires and werewolves mortal and exorcise ghosts. She is married to an earl, Lord Maccon, who also happens to be a werewolf alpha. At the end of the last novel, their daughter, Prudence was brought into the world. Unlike her mother, who merely cancels out supernatural power, Prudence steals it. This leads to some entertaining toddler mayhem scenes, as this novel is set a few years after Heartless. I think Timeless did a good job of tying up many of the loose ends of the series. I enjoyed the exploration of the relationship between Lord and Lady Maccon and their daughter, and their daughter's adoptive father, Lord Akeldama. It is interesting to see how they have settled into their domestic roles in adjoining households. However, this doesn't last long. Loyal readers of the series know that Alexia cannot stay out of trouble for too long. She receives a summons from the vampire queen of Alexandria which she cannot ignore. Thus, Lord and Lady Maccon and their daughter see off to Egypt under the guise of accompanying Ivy Tunstell's theatre brigade. Of course, this can only end...well. While these characters are away from London, I enjoyed seeing the maturation of Biffy. I rather enjoyed what transpired between him and Professor Lyall. The mystery elements of the story were well played -- the reader was only privy to the information that the main characters had, so it was hard to predict the answers ahead of time. The novel had a good bit of adventure, some thrills, and a copious dose of Gail Carriger's signature style of humor. And through all this, Carriger manage to continue the development of her characters, not allowing them to become stagnant. While I can't say that Timeless was my favorite novel out of the five, I enjoyed it all the same. I'm sad to see the series end, but I think it left off on a good foot and closed in a satisfactory way.

The book was great, like so many of Tolkien's other books.

Found the book akin to Freakonomics. The takeaway is simple.... do something more and you'll stand out, study it obsessively and you will be an outlier. It was interesting, but not the most encouraging. : )

This was more like 2.5 stars for me--someone who has plenty of personal experience with most of the obstacles Draut describes--but wasn't badly done and could be 3 stars for some well-off baby boomer who's somehow wondering what the hell our problem is. I mostly skimmed, though. I paid most attention to the last couple of chapters which had some suggestions for how to, you know, change every single hegemonic/political/social/educational institution we've got.
