Deliverance Trembley, who is twelve years old, begins her diary in December 1691. She lives with her sickly seventeen-year-old sister, Mem, on a farm in Salem Village, Massachusetts. Their uncle, who is supposed to be caring for the girls now that they are orphans and their older brother is away with the militia, has gone to sea and ordered the girls to let no one know he has gone away. Deliverance worries the neighbors will find out the truth and hates to have to lie. But when girls in Salem Village begin to behave strangely, and are said to be bewitched, Deliverance has even bigger worries. Are there truly witches in Salem Village, doing the Devil's work? Or is the mass hysteria sweeping through the village leading to the accusations of innocent people? I loved this new book in the Dear America series, and I highly recommend it to readers who are fans of the series, or who like historical fiction about the Salem Witch Trials. I'd been hoping for a while that there would be a book in the series about this topic, and I wasn't disappointed at all by this book. The author did a great job at bringing the events in Salem in 1692 to life.

An unbelievable story told with verve and insight. This book is partially a biography of Clarence King, a famed author and friend of notables like John Hay (Secretary of State under Roosevelt, who called King "the best and brightest of his generation") and Henry Adams (of "The Education of Henry Adams" fame), who was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey (1879-1881). What Sandweiss shows here, though, is that he lived a secret double life, spending years pretending to be a black Pullman car porter named James Todd so that he could marry his love Ada Copeland, an ex-slave from Georgia living in Brooklyn. Sandweiss is able to relate King's odd habit of sudden disappearance from the historical record to the times he spent with his black family and with the birth of his children. Only at his deathbed did he reveal to his wife that he was not a Pullman porter but one of the most famous men of the era, and white. The parts about his marriage to Ada are ultimately built on speculation, but Sandweiss conducts much of this with surprising intuition and confidence. Though some parts drag, this is an amazing story that deserves to be more widely known.

A cookbook...of course! This is a good one if you like fairly simple French bistro-style cooking. If you get it, read the chapters on ingredients and tools. Invaluable.

Not a bad book, per se, but eminently forgettable. The "old people" accounts were far more engaging for me than Alford's personal story... I most enjoyed the interview with Harold Bloom, that cantankerous old coot.

OK so I started reading this and I was like "wait didn't that happen in the last book?" So guess what? I've already read it! Yeah, guess how dumb I feel?? And I've done this 2 times before with is series! Yep, nothing new!! I in fact realized I've read this book not once not twice but THREE times! Wow. Maybe I should start paying more attention to the books I read...
Enjoyed this historical fiction about a young couple that were thrown together by chance and their life experiences they shared.
