Really loving this book! Compelling characters and plot; lovely language about Parisian architecture; interesting historical perspective on the Shoah and the mood throughout Europe in the late 1930s.

Good cocktail party examples of current statistical applications. Learn how credit card companies can predict divorce and why oenophiles are against quantitative analysis of weather patterns. But the book doesn't get beyond a list of interesting uses or applications. There's no surprise in the book other than 'they are watching and tracking our every move and purchase' and no grand theory other than 'computers allow the use of greater sized data sets and more quantitative analysis over qualitative experts.'

There was a hype about this book long before I read it, and now the movie is out. It was enjoyable, yet not to the extent of my expectations.

This is pretty similar to Only Forward, Smith's first novel, except that this one doesn't descend into tedious drivel halfway through... Both feature a very interesting setting and a street-smart but self-depracating male protagonist who knows how to handle himself as a result of a somewhat shady past and who embarks mostly unwillingly on a mission that involves wise-cracking, shooting and often jammily stumbling through a series of encounters with quirky people in odd locations. Both hence have the same generally entertaining but occasionally irritating informal narrative style, which isn't quite as endearing or as funny as it wants to be but is for the most part enjoyable. Both also feature a kind-of secondary, paranormal dimension that runs parallel to the real world and in which strange things can and do happen, but fortunately in Spares we're - well, spared - most of the nonsensical bollocks that accompanies the story's inevitable shift to this other realm. In fact, some of the stuff in Spares that could almost be viewed as filler to the plot and action sequences is actually quite impressive, and I'd be tempted to give this four stars if it wasn't for the fact that it was all a bit familiar. Where's the half star option when you need it? All in all, an enjoyable and quite addictive, but not brilliant, read.

Excellent book. Read it after the movie and it really expanded upon what was in the movie. It even had characters that were not in the movie, which was fascinating. I'm a big fan of both the book and the movie.

While I admit that any book that advertises cleaning tips included is clearly not my type of book, I was still disapointed in Scene of the Grime. the characters were weak, the mystery very thin, and the ending pulled out of a hat. I found myself not caring about who, what, or why, but how many, as in how many pages were left.

Sped through this book. Fascinating story and kept wanting to find out what happened next. I don't know why I expected there to be more on the psychology of battered women generally - this book really is a memoir of the author's time in an emotionally and physically abusive marriage. It was interesting because the author does not fit the stereotype of a battered woman. At times, I wished the author had engaged in some further analysis, looking back on that time, to the things that made her react to the abuse in the way she did. I feel that she was trying to convey that this type of thing can happen to any woman at any time for any reason. I just wish that out of this came some more concrete identification of how women can protect themselves. I don't mean to say that women should modify their behavior to avoid abuse or that they can attract abusive men by doing certain things-- I just wish there were something more to take away than "it can happen to you!!" - scary and disempowering. But after all, this was a memoir, not a study of domestic violence.
