Honestly, I couldn't help but to enjoy this book; however, I found the morals presented in a very obvious (and occasionally stifling) manner. The messages are sound: don't have sex before marriage; respect women; don't undervalue a good education; and, of course, respect your elders, etc.--but sometimes the messages were delivered through intensely formal and stiff-sounding dialogue (whether internal or external). The tone, language and syntax seemed out of place for a group of eighteen-year olds. Even the comments made by some of the adult characters occasionally sounded forced, rehearsed or unnatural. Still, all in all, this was a pleasurable read. I am definitely looking forward to the sequal since this books ends with a definite cliffhanger!

My book club selected this book as our April 2007 read so that we could learn more about the Presidential race. I can say that I did learn more about Mr. Obama's background, but I am not sure that what I learned was of any significance. I felt the book to be written hurridly by someone who may be a great speaker, but not an practiced writer. His experiences, particularly in Chicago, merely play into existing racial stereotypes. I was very much hoping that his perspective as a person from a mixed heritage would provide examples of the breaking down of racial stereotypes. Unfortunately, his narrative and the experiences he chose to include merely reinforced many stereotypes. I hope "The Audacity of Hope" is better written and edited -- and not a hurried commentary on nothing!

This was a fun scifi/detective story. Interesting interspecies (human/alien) interactions and imagined cultural differences. A good hook for the rest of the series. Will read them when I'm needing something easy! Maybe (?) a few bible swears, no sexuality, some violence.

Very inspirational, intense, awesome, extraordinary, revolutionary book. I think that pretty much covers it. This great book reminds us of who really matters and who we can live without. It reminds us to look towards the future without forgetting the past.

I would read this again and again. I love sciency things, though this focused a bit more on surfers and less on the true science of rogue waves. It was still completely and utterly fascinating, and very well done. Also made me vary wary of cruise ships, but that may just be me. Casey sets forth on wanting to learn more about the giants of waves, the 100 footers and bigger. Where do they come from? Why did boats randomly disappear of the face of the earth? Were they obliterated by rogue waves that popped up out of no where? Can a wave like that pop up out of no where? Why do surfers go after waves like these? How do they find them? These are only some of the questions she seeks to answer, and through interviews, attending conferences and her own research, provides answers too. If you're an ocean buff or just interested, read it. I still quote it.

A surprisingly ripping yarn. A cracking good read. It's a good mystery (arguably one of the first), both British and adventury, and offers an interesting look at the way the Brits dealt with India and the Indians at the time. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
