I liked the young adult 1st person point of view. It wasn't about the scenery but the details of climbing Mt. Everest. Granted it simplified it tons I am sure but I enjoyed the book.

As I have only a passing interest in most works of fiction, it's remarkable I sought fit to give this piece 4 stars. Simply, it made me fall in love with words and the English language all over again- not an altogether easy feat. Compelling, dark and provoking.

Michael Lewis can sure tell a story. He excels at taking esoteric topics like credit default swaps or sabermetrics (see "Moneyball") and fashioning highly readable, character-driven books that not only educate, but also entertain

Oh, what I learned from this book? I learned to confirm my belief that Ken Follet is a bludgeoning hack, beating us into submission with block-faced characters chasing plot points. I was just disappointed with this book. Obvious characters. Everything was boring and cliched. I didn't care about anything or anyone in the novel. Well, that's not true. The one good aspect was the main evil guy's anguished moral dilemma regarding his catatonic wife and some other hot woman. That was interesting. Everything else sucked like a bee sting.

My friend benjamin, one of my favorite writers, recommended this book to me. Every twenty-something woman with any affinity for Cornell, New York, or life as an intellectually-inclined young urbanite who has looked for, is looking for, or hoping to stumble upon love should read this. ben says so.

Besides the interesting POV for a narrative I wasn't incredibly impressed. I finished with a feeling a kin to- and sooo? I'm starting to understand why some books are classics, and some aren't.

This book is a literary support group for anyone who has ever woken up and thought "Aw hell, how do I not have it sorted out yet?" It's a collection of pieces by talented writers exploring that limbo between college and the next big steps in your life. So, if you have a pulse, at least some aspect of this book is bound to hit home with you. The writing is engaging and a fast read. And at the same time as it pokes fun at how ridiculous life as a 20 or 30something becomes (cough cough, we make it), it is compassionate. I like that they examined everything from the concept of the Urban Tribe or the Boston Marriage through moving back in with parents, being a romantic, the oddity of the workplace, etc. It's not a huge book, but it's comprehensive. They get it!

I read this for my first book club, and it isn't the type of thing that would have grabbed me if it hadn't essentially been assigned. That said, I wasn't too happy with it. It was sort of fun and interesting to read the accounts of the various people who knew this kid before he died in the Alaska wilderness, and it was similarly fun to consume alcohol while speculating about how messed up he may have been, or why the author seems to be so keen on him. Basically, as far as the Chris McCandless story goes, it's pretty painful to sit through the account of someone accidentally dying in a slow, avoidable way. Besides that, the book clubbers were generally not empathetic with a character who had no apparent respect or appreciation for a seemingly decent family. As for the author's account of the story, it does an unconvincing job of redeeming McCandless, even though it casts him in a slightly better light than some media coverage might have. It seems in large part to be a vehicle for the author to recount his own, more successful youthful Alaskan adventure.
