I loved the subplot, told only in the pictures, wherein the father consults archaic psychological texts in order to understand his daughter's distress.

From a list of SF classics I came across - this is one I hadn't read. Published in 1973, it holds up pretty well. There are some gender stereotypes that are typical of SF published during that time. I enjoyed this, though not enough to read the rest in the series.

This is the Charles E. Wilbour translation published by Barnes and Noble. We are reading this out loud as a family, which makes it ever so slow. Beginning with the last paragraph on p. 143, there is a description of Javert which could be used to describe Osama Bin Laden. And here's a fun quote from p. 153: Winter changes into stone the water of heaven and the heart of man.

A fascinating look at the inhumanities of men fighting war in the name of God. You won't believe the shocking realities of torture and punishment men inflicted on men.

Sayers's deceptively shallow dilettante gumshoe, Lord Peter Wimsey (a sort of twentieth-century Scarlet Pimpernel), dazzles and seduces (me) his reader as he pursues worthy lady love, the taciturn Harriet Vane. The clever murder mysteries are delightful background to their epic Romance. Sam and Diane need not apply.

This book was really interesting and in many ways heartbreaking, all the woman who were cut off from university, education and public expression confined to discussing literary themes as a proxy for there thoughts on the world around them. But somehow, the author seemed somehow strangely detached, and I never felt that I understood her motives, her frustrations or how the revolution changed her relationship with her husband who appeared to have been such a part of her public life prior to the revolution, and I ached to understand her emotions but she unfortunately never provided insight into this. Being fair, she lived through it and has emerged from it, and somehow had to make peace with her experience and not hurt those she left behind, but nonetheless the book left me longing for the emotional detail of an intellectual woman in a society where it is impossible for her to engage in public debate.

Mrs. Marian States, Mother of Captain Edward States "When the media was full of the news of the crash of flight 587 I followed "US Read" on the Internet daily. The writers did a wonderful and thorough job of reporting and raising questions. Many of these questions remain unanswered to this day. By bringing attention to the eyewitness statements, many of which the government chose to ignore, you have done more than pay tribute to the horrific waste of lives caused by the tragedy of Flight 587. As the Mother of Captain Edward States and in the name of his Co-Pilot Sten Molin, their crew and all their passengers, I thank you for writing this book. "

Another novel that flicks between 2 different time zones this time between modern day NZ and the life of a 40+ married working mother and letters from her grandmother at the time NZ women got the vote. Really enjoyed this book although I am not sure how the author mananged to place listening devices inside my home to capture the arguments my kids have as the teens in this book are having the same arguments!

There is a hilarious paragraph about pancakes in this book that is as absurd and valuable as fiction ever gets.
