I really wanted to like this one, and I mostly did, but it was about 150 pages too long. I love character-driven books, and Franzen delivers nothing less, but we were introduced to a lot of characters, characters that didn't necessarily need all the detail.

Interesting little book set in the Stone Age, full of allegory and poetical prose. It seems to be impossible to set a novel in prehistoric times without plenty of symbolism and reference to modern issues -- or maybe it's just me. I'm reminded of one of Jack London's more obscure novels, "Before Adam," and to a lesser extent Paleolithic Porn (Jean Auel's "Clan of the Cave Bear" series, memorable for its heroine's resourceful invention of the world's first diaphragm). Or maybe the Flintstones.

This review only applies to The Aspern Papers, because I never read The Turn of the Screw. And it's been a few years since I read the book, so I don't remember a whole lot...just that I felt like the story built and built and then never really concluded. I decided against reading The Turn of the Screw because it sounded too scary for me. (I am reviewing this book now because after my review of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, a few people asked me what the SCARIEST cover was, and this would be it. To this day, our edition of this book has a green smiley face sticker over the face of the little girl on the cover.)

One thing I learned in reading this book is that we all need to think long and hard what we believe about life and death. After losing two wonderful parents, within a year of each other, it is not an easy choice to make. Even when they have made their decision very clear to everyone about their desire to live or to die, there is a part of us that questions their choice. We may respect the decision to not be a burden on family, and the choice to go gracefully, but in some cases just sharing time with them becomes bittersweet.
