Good ol' Chuck up to his wacky story-telling!! And this is certainly wacky. I listened to the audio book, a good story for that media since it is a narration... Anyway, without giving anything away, I recommend this book to anyone who as enjoyed anything else by Chuck.

Like her Lake of Dead Languages, I find this book a guilty pleasure. Once again, all the loose ends tie up too neatly, but it's still a really enjoyable read.

This book is an open window to the everyday world of an extended family living in Kabul immediately after the fall of the Taliban. Well-written and compassionate, it gives a realistic view of the poverty and struggles of various members of the family, the despair or hope, a few victories, more defeats, a sense of the limitations that each person has in that society based on gender, socioeconomic status, position in the family, etc. I cannot help but respond strongly to what in my Western eyes amounts to slavery and oppression of women that many parts of the world continue to accept as the natural way of things. I hate to judge another's cultural and religious standards, but this feels wrong to me no matter where it happens. Seierstad's writing and view of life continue to impress me.

For a novelette it was good. I had heard mixed reviews but of course when I started reading a Plum novel, I couldn't stop. It's what my mother has coined "candy". There is an addition of a third guy option in this book that I hope to see more of when the series continues. As if she didn't have enough choices;)

Hats off to Lisa Diamond for this book. Even though there's a bit of sampling bias and limitation in her longitudinal study (which could easily be remedied by better grants and more research assistants; no doubt after this book she'll be in a better position to get that), the findings she uncovers are doubtless invaluable to the field of sex research, and will hopefully be taken seriously by the scientific community and laypersons alike. For common readers, the book is very accessible, easy to read, and Diamond is at once an unbiased yet warm narrator, which keeps her more dry explanations from becoming close to boring. A great read for both academics and casual readers alike--I've taken sexuality classes, but read this for pleasure and enjoyed it immensely.
