One of the greatest historical works ever conceived or written and the final word on Roman history!!! Do NOT read an abridged version but, if you can take the time, read all five volumes. I could NOT find a listing for all the volumes together so I wrote this review under the title of one the abridged works. I did however read the whole thing and can guarantee that it does not dissapoint!. No other work has portrayed with such clarity the march of Rome's empire into anarchy and ruin, and no other historian has given his readers so much to ponder in their own situations. Concentrating on the 13 centuries beginning with the rule of Antennas Pius (138-161 A.D.) and ending with the fall of the Empire in the West, this author-abridged volume chronicles "the triumph of barbarism and religion" in the disruption of the united Empire, the rise of Christianity, the progress of the Asiatic Huns, and the revolt of the Goths. Never far below the surface of this narrative is Gibbon's sense of irony, typified in his definition of history as "little more than the crimes, follies, and misfortunes of mankind."

On the surface level this book may come across as disturbing. The characters are a bit coarse and hard to relate to. The entire plot and premise of the story could leave one a little queasy. The setting of the book, comprising a particular futuristic society also made me very uncomfortable at times. However, I have to appreciate a book that really makes me think, and this one did. I became quite fascinated reading this book as I considered it's deeper moral and allegorical meanings. The story was engaging enough to keep me interested in reading the sequels. It was definitely not a "feel happy" "leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling" book, but it left me wanting to know more about the author's purpose. It was obvious to me, from the outset of the book, that the author had a purpose well beyond telling what could simply be construed as a barbaric and unsettling story. That is not what I took from it at all. I found myself looking for symbolism and modern day parallels. I gleaned a lot from my internet searches that both confirmed and expanded my insights into the book. My response to this book would be one in which my AP English teacher would be proud! Not my typical genre, and I wouldn't say i "enjoyed" it--but I appreciated it for the great literary piece of work that I think is. VERY fascinating.

I love the witty banter between Hunter and Quinn. It makes you blush, giggle, and turn into a high school fan girl with the shrieking and the whole bit. The story was cliche but still good. I love the relationships in this book. So if you want a good plotline read something else but if you like character development and witty fun then this is the book for you. Loved it.

I hated the ending!!! This book kept me engaged the whole time and could not wait to see what would happen next. After reading this I feel like this might be how certain people (who will remain unamed...) got elected into office!!! That is so scary to see how money can really be maniputlated. It was a change of pace from my usual reads so I enjoyed the diversion... but it left me lacking in many regards.

This is an exquisite book, a sort of artist's biography of the life of Mary Delany, who was an amazing woman, artistically productive until she died at age 88 (whose long life in itself was unusual for the 1700s). Interspersed where appropriate were aspects of the author, Molly Peacock's, life and her artistic and personal development. Truly memorable.

This is an extremely well written and fascinating book. It's not what I expected when I set out to sample it, especially as you're introduced to angels in the first paragraph—I was expecting something in the paranormal vein of things. Instead, I got this extremely interesting exploration of faith and spirituality, the role and perhaps nature of angels and demons, and the meaning and implications of disease and illness.
