As we all are taught in history class that the 1960’s was not a pleasant time for the African American community with Civil Right Movement going on and other movements to gain rights for blacks of America. Many books was written about the mistreatment of blacks. One was “Black Like Me” by Griffin, John. This book is a great book the setting is relatable so it through you into the book. The book is base on a true story so it makes you think like wow could I ever do that. Also the drama of the book keep you turning from page too page. In the book the author John Griffin a white man actually take the idiom Put yourself in somebody else shoes and makes it reality. He disguise himself as a black man and moves into the black community. Trying to experience the pressure of black life. This book settling of the 1950’s is what make you really feed into the book. Being in the 1960’s hitchhiking through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia southern states which was very segregated allows this book to bring excitement in grabbing the dramatic experience of being a black in the 1960’s. If it wasn’t for the settling the book wouldn’t had been deeply drive into the concept that life was hard as blacks in the 1960’s. By choosing primarily the southern state that hated the idea of segregation. John Howard Griffin place his self in a dangerous situation. Where he peer his self as a black man in the 1950’s. He actually takes his self out his non threaten middle class life to relieve the truths of segregation. Making it hard not to love this book. Drama is build from the white man, over night change. Becoming a resident of the black community. Losing all connection with his past companions, and force to make new ones, which is a race consider of the lower then your previous one. The last thing that made me like this book was the non- fiction of the book, the plot. To think of a white man in the 1960’s changing his skin color to display the in different treatment of people of the darker skin. The plot of the book itself grabs your attention. I have day dream of what it would be like to be from a white family. But John Griffin made that day dream a reality when he took this experiment. Making this book a reader! “Black Like Me” by Griffin, John is a great book with a settling that you can relate too and A unusually plot that makes you think and wonder. Also the drama keeps coming page after page. In a world where the whites rain supreme. A white still steps into the shoes of a black man. So if you are looking for something to read that might spike your interest. I suggest you get this book
