I can't count how many times I've read this book. Robin McKinley has a gift for taking old stories and reworking them into something that is new and unique, and yet still bringing out pieces of the original that the reader might not have ever noticed before.[return][return]In this version of the story, "Beauty" is not, in fact, very beautiful. Her given name is Honor, to complement the names of her sisters Grace and Hope, but at a young age she discovered what honor meant and said that she wished to be beauty instead. Unfortunately, she didn't grow into this nickname, but her sisters and father were too kind, she says, to remark on it.[return][return]The closeness of the family is one of the changes McKinley made to the story, and I find that it adds a great deal to the story to have Beauty struggle not only with her own lonliness and fear in the Beast's castle, but with her painful separation from her family. In this version, her desire to leave the Beast for the fateful seven-day visit is motivated by her love for her sister Grace, and it is her family who persuades her to stay a little longer because of their own love for her. By switching the motivations from jealousy and spite to love, McKinley opens up new and interesting facets to the story.[return][return]The main reason I love this version so much, though, is Beauty's love of books and reading. She connects with the Beast through his magnificent library, and in fact learns to recognize and accept the magic of the castle through her trust of books. I have heard several rumors that the makers of the Disney version of the story used McKinley's book as a partial source, especially for Belle's love of books and the Beast's library. Although I've never been able to find any source that confirms the rumors, I was certainly thrilled to find one of my favorite parts of my own favorite version of the tale incorporated into the movie.[return][return]Beauty is a marvelously told book in its own right, even separated from the story on which it's based. McKinley has a way of writing that's simple and yet elegant, and has a remarkable facility for conveying her characters' feelings through the way they describe their own surroundings. I'm a huge fan of all of her works, but this one stands above the rest.

I cried three times when I first read this book and once the second time. It is a book that every kid must read. It makes you think, I wish I was that young again, even if you are only 18. I am going to read it again, tonight!

I really liked this book and understand how it was a Newberry Award winner in 1958. A very good youth book with a message for all of us.

Coming from a recovering heroin addict, I could relate to this book, as what I liked about the book is that it showed how Heroin Addiction can affect even the upper class, the intelligent studious individuals. It broke down the stereotype, and Ann made it easy for those who weren't addicts, to understand what a downward spiral this addiction is,and how it differs from others. Many people could read this and take it seriously unlike "SMACK" which was the typical, "Junkie" read, in my opinion.

As the title would suggest, this is a collection of sci-fi takes on the Great Detective. As with any anthology, the stories varied in quality—there was, for example, an interesting story about a time traveling Moriarty and an intriguing tale about a Holmes who may (or may not) have succumbed to senility. Mostly, though, there wasn't enough Sherlock Holmes in a collection that was nominally all about him! Instead there were stories about an alien race that has modeled itself after Victorian England (including a Holmes stand-in), or a highly-intelligent dog that solves crime, or a pair of children with the power to to evoke fictional creatures like the Hound of the Baskervilles to kill their parents. Okay, fine. But what I wanted was explorations of Holmes' (and Watson's) character, through the wonderful, slightly-distorted lens that sci-fi tropes can provide. I wanted to see Holmes' wonderful mind react to time travel or alien life; I want to see his and Watson's friendship stand the test of time and space, as promised by the title. But unfortunately, this collection remained sadly earthbound. Much better is Neil Gaiman's "A Study in Emerald" which, fortunately, is available online: [http://www.neilgaiman.com/exclusive/s...].

I don't agree with the "past lives" theory..... karma follows us from our "past lives".....she states that someone who is taken at a young age (child), is because that child must have murdered or have not protected others in their "previous life"....those who are weathly, were generous in previous life or lives......so on..... I do not recommend this book.

Really good! Looks at the supposed culture war and the return to Authority based teaching and argues for a Liberal approach while still maintaining authority. It helped clarify, for me, the difference between authority/Authority and liberal/Liberal. Excellent.

This is one of my purse books; it's small, endlessly re-readable, and it can be read a few paragraphs at a time if you like. It's one of my favorite travel narratives, and maybe one of my favorite books. It's very much a book of its time - there are what we might euphemistically term "flights of fancy" (in other words, sections that are obviously totally made up or very exaggerated in a book that purports to be true) and what I tend to think of as bouts of literature (where Jerome suddenly goes all allegorical and polysyllabic and serious on us - it's kind of like a measles of the written word). These just add to the fascination of the book, at least for me, but I wouldn't recommend this to someone who doesn't have some experience with Victorian narrators. The book is, quite simply, the story of Jerome's week-long trip boating on the Thames in company with Harris, George, and Montmorency. (My favorite character is, quite naturally, Montmorency.) And it's funny and fun; I rank it above Innocents Abroad in the annals of early travel humor. Worth reading for the chapter summaries alone. Worth reading multiple times for anyone who loves travel humor, Victorian times, or dogs. (And if you've read this, I recommend To Say Nothing of the Dog, by Connie Willis.)

Read these books when I was like nine. Have loved them every day since.

Two novellas that don't really go together comprise this oddly-named book by Geoff Dyer. In Jeff in Venice, we witness the rather depressing scene of journalists and art critics gathering in that wet Italian city for the Biennale where they drink themselves silly (as if they need the help) and search for sex (successfully, as Mr. Dyer apparently likes to write about it). Things slow down (or are less racy, at least) as we head to India for some travel writing about dirt, poverty, disease, and Hinduism (much less sex). This half provides less plot than the first, and both could have used the pep plot provides. The writing is decent, but with so many books and so little time, I say: Why bother?
